Hello ETCG COMMUNITY ! How is everyone doing ? I just wanted to get your opinion on Automotive Gloves. What do you think about Mechanix Gloves. Also when changing oil what are the best gloves to use ?

I was doing an awd clutch job the other day and I had a pair of John Deere labeled cloth gloves that had the palm and fingers dipped in rubber. These came from the Tractor Store and were very inexpensive. The John Deere label fell off immediately but the gloves look like new after some hard use.

Most mechanic’s gloves I’ve sampled are too thick and not enough grip. These junky looking gloves are perfect. However, they are not oil proof.

I do kind of like the snap-on set I got a few years ago, but I actually like the generic old pair of weight training “vee’r ere to pump you up” gloves with the fingers exposed so I can minimize the scrubbing later but still feel what I’m doing. And you feel 80’s cool, so that’s a bonus. I chucked the mechanix set I got at autozone or advance a long while back, just no feeling, no grip, nothin’. Considered them rather worthless for using myself.

I’ve just never cared for the rubber/latex full coverage ones as it’s too difficult sometimes when you have to stretch yourself into a spot with just feeling your way to getting something on or off.

Of course if I did this for a living, and had to eat lunch/breaks tasting differential fluid with my sandwich or cig because I didn’t have the time to fully scrub before, I’d likely change my mind…

I use the Mechanix Fast Fit gloves all the time. They’re thin enough to use all day and seem to hold up well, but when I do oil changes I usually wear generic Harbor Freight Nitrile gloves so I dont cover my Mechanix gloves in oil.

That’s a good point. I would use Mechanix gloves for the rough work like changing tires etc. Oil changes and handling other fluids would go to the latex type gloves !
