Hello everyone I have a 1992 Mazda MX3 I was driving along and noticed the temperate gauge was almost at H so I turned the heater on and it was just cold air coming out so I pulled over to let it cool and was about to turn it off then the gauge started dropping and the heat came back I drove it home with no further issues I think there might be air in the cooling system because when I bought it the prevues owner told me it was running straight water so any help would be appreciated thanks

Not knowing if your coolant is mixed or not… Check your fluid with the engine cold. Add mix fluid until it’s top off. Run the engine to operating temperature. If you can get a funnel like eric video do so as it save a mess 😉

You can say its bleed off when both upper and lower radiator hose are hot.. I should stay cold for a good time as the Tstat is not open.. but when it will most of the air or all the air should leave though the radiator cap. Let it run for another 5 minute so you should be certain it free of air. Put your rad cap back (maybe replace it if it’s old, cracked, it worth not much as it an area that people forget to look for.

The fan should kick on and off… that should tells you the radiator is doing it’s job as cooling and the electric part of the fan is good.

Now look for leak is it appear to have one.. You may require to pressure test it. Check the strength of the coolant … if it is mostly water you may want to drop all the fluid and restart fresh with mix coolant. Now if no leak is found you may have a exhaust combustion leak.. but keep us posted with what you come with first.

Sounds like air in the system for sure. More information, videos, including one on how to get the air out, as well as information on how to deal with overheat situations here.
