I’ve got a Mazda 2001 tribute here with power steering leaks that suddenly wouldn’t start. Client complained of grinding noises and loud squealing, was later discovered that power steering reservoir was empty and supply line to pump was leaking. Tightened clamp and refilled reservoir, noises gone and leak stopped. Two days later client says leak is back and now it won’t start. Turn key, can hear starter engage with flywheel but engine does not turn. No engine light, no noise, no problems of any sort. Just parked it one night and now it won’t start, just clicks. Checked battery, good shape, holds charge, load tested good! Could power steering fluid get into the coolant? Someone mentioned that, and it has me concerned.

I am trying to connect the two issues but I cannot seem to come up with anything, I am guessing the no-start problem is not related to the previous issue. The only thing I can think of is that maybe the pump seized up due to lack of lubrication. Does the pully spin by hand? I don’t think this would cause a no-start though..

Anyway, I would clean the battery terminals and do a voltage drop test on the positive cable going to the starter and on the path to ground and see if there are any problems in the connections.

I don’t see how the power steering fluid could get into the coolant.

Xyius is onto something, pop the belt off and see what happens.

Thanks for the video, it confirmed what I was originally thinking. Thanks for taking the time to find and upload that video!

Yeah I would agree with you, I don’t think the two issues are related, as I tried to move the belt and pulley previous to starting it, I found that everything moved freely. A voltage drop test and cable inspection are in order I think. Thanks for the help.

                  This may help

A TSB from Mazda concerning no start/no crank situation where water gets into the X134 connector and causes issues. The TSB will show you where to check, might not be your problem, but it is an easy check and a good thing to eliminate when troubleshooting.
