What it does, it keeps the upper cylinders lube and has a cleaning detergent. I been using it myself. This may explain more about it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FfyciT9jbrw

Have noticed about a 1 mile a gallon differnce when using 4 ounces in a full tank. I am on a quest to get 400 miles on a tank of gas in my 99 Civic. Will have to do some research to see if anyone has tried putting mineral oil in their gas tank. Think my bump in mileage is do to my fuel injectors, and fuel pump, working smoother. I can not hear my fuel pump come on.

              Cool!

I would also use different gas stations – just in case their blend of gas is influencing the mileage. (Depending on where you live, they may be still using Summer mix which boosts mileage.)

But at $6 a quart ( or whatever it is), I have to wonder if it’s really worth it – even if you’re using only 4 ounces a tank.

I look forward to your research and data.

It has some cleaning properties in oil or gas.
For most part I’d call it Snake Oil. It wont do magic, it wont turn an abused engine into shiny thing.

I would use it if you get for 5 bucks a bottle , use every once in while as upper cylinder lubricant and thats all.

Not worth much more than that.

As for as for injector cleaning : Techron does better job at cleaning injectors.

As far as for engine cleaning : Having higher quality oil is most important thing, additives do more bad than good in most cases.Penzzoil makes fine oil for cleaning , even their PYB does a great job, no need for additive unless your buying non name brand stuff.

                Cheers,

It’s probably a band-aide fix. It’s probably snake oil in some ways. However, I put some in an 02 Celica with 150,000 miles, that has been cared for over the years, but was developing a little valve tapping, and it quieted it right down. I did not use much. I used it in the oil not the gas. I’m just saying, it did help. I’m presuming it might have cleaned some small oil ports (best case) or just thinned the oil so it flows better. This car is getting all of 500 miles a year on it these days.

It seems to be mineral oil and mineral spirits. It could be more kin to ATF but I do not think it’s based on ATF. Some say it’s kerosene – this is probably also too extreme. It does seem to thin some of the oil and that’s why I got better top engine lubrication in the old Celica. I agree with those that say don’t use it if your engine is fine. If you’re getting a little valve tapping on an old engine, you may want to give it a try.

I won’t use it unless I was actually having a problem, and even then I’d just use Seafoam. I don’t believe in additives unless they haven a proven benefit or there is an actual problem and even then it is better to get to the root of the problem. Slick 50 used to be good stuff..before they changed the formula anyways.

I guess it comes down to what we “grew up with.” I have never used Seafoam and I think how it’s made much a comeback. I think of Seafoam is being an engine flush but I’d probably use something else for that. To be fair, my neighbor, who is a real pro mechanic (unlike me) likes Seafoam – whatever. I used Slick 50 in days gone by – never could tell it helped anything. I like CRC products but they are also the ones that put out “Guaranteed to Pass” which is, I’m sorry to say, a joke!
