ok first of all things: my car is a 91 honda crx si special edition, engine is a D15B.

instead of making many different threads on different Qs i shall just combine them into one big thread and number off the Qs that way.

thats my beauty! ^^ lol anyways:

      1. Eric, (or any other ASE cert. tech) if i provided the parts, how much would you cost me if i came to you to put in a new front left (looking towards the front of the car) axle, oil pan gasket, new pads and rotors (back and front)?

      2. how long would it take for you to do a job like that?

      3. does the crx si have a cabin air filter? (i dont think it does, but i’m just double checking)

      4. replacing the tranny fluid…instead of using the fill plug on the side of the tranny, my buddy came up with the idea of using the speedo sensor as a fill port (on top of the tranny), would that be safe to do?

      5. (not really a Q) but i’ll be taking lots of pics and vids hopefully and i can put them up in this thread if you want me to? 😀

      cheers everyone 😀

      thanx

so just an update: hehe. tonight we replaced all 4 brake pads and rotors, and replaced the left front axle.

it was interesting to say the least. my buddy and I are very sore and since i hurt my back about a month ago, it was pretty tight. and can barely move by the end of the night.

i also replaced the spark plugs as well too. the engine was running too hot? (so says my haynes service manual in the back). the spark plug was white. and didnt look like there was any ashy deposits on them.

anyways….i took some pics! between the old axle, new brakes, and old spark plugs.

these pics are from the spark plugs, goin in from right to left for cylinders) i have a Q also… now that the new brakes are on, i’m getting a constant grinding noise from the left front. could it be that the caliper is not retracting?

far right cylinder (4? i think?)

All 4 plugs. NGK (thank god)

oh and this retainer bolt was holding onto my right front brake rotor (face palm)

            1. Grinding Noise – You probably bumped/bent/tweeked the dust shield while doing the brakes or replacing the axle, and now it’s rubbing on the rotor. If the caliper is not retracting and you have a constant noise.. then your car would pull to that side while driving and chances are your rim would be smoking hot! You can’t tell from the pictures, but it does look like you forgot to grease the shims, pads, & pins.

            2. AUTOMD – has a web site and app that does repair estimates and times that I’ve found to be pretty close.

well i did a pretty thurough (spelling) job on the brakes, the one pad that was worn un-even was on the front right wheel. I barely got the caliper off the rotor, the pins were sooooo dry. the front left wheel i think i didnt put enough silicone on the pins or i know for sure i missed one, so today i’m going to take apart the caliper again and lube it all up. and i’ll definitely make sure to check the dust shield.

and yes i bought anti-seize and silicone paste for the brakes lol.

so today is replacing the oil pan gasket, changing out the engine oil and tranny oil.

today was a lazy day. didnt get the oil pan gasket changed or the engine oil or tranny oil. next sat. we’ll be doing that instead.

we did however fix the front left “grinding” problem, and it WAS in fact the dust protector plate, it was bent and making contact with the rotor. so we just bent it back and now its all good. we then also replaced the brake fluid and i did the change the exact way eric did it in his brake fluid vid.
my buddy and i couldnt believe how bad the fluid was. it was literally charcoal looking. it was gross but now its all nice and clean and now i dont have squishy brakes 😀 rock hard brakes FTW!

and eric….i know you’ve heard this dozens of times but thank you for putting in time and effort and being selfless into making helpful vids. with out the brake pad/rotor replacement vid, with out the brake fluid change vid, with out the axle replacement vid…..i would be no where and it would of tooken me alot longer to do the job at hand. and after watching the pan gasket replacement vid i know darn well that i have very high confidence to do the change.

thank you sooo much eric! i’ll keep you all posted on this thread with my car progress 😀

Well you’ve been busy since the first post so I’ll try and touch on your questions as I read them.

As for pricing it varies based on labor rates but I can post what I feel the labor times are.

                  Axle= .5hr Oil pan gasket= 1.0hr Pads and rotors= 1.0-.7hr

No cabin air filter in that model

You can use the speedo hole however you may find that the speed sensor has a lot of difficulty coming out, if thats the case leave it alone and do it the ‘normal’ way because if you break that part it’ll be expensive. Also if you fill from that location be sure to remove the fill plug and only fill till it runs out. Lastly make sure you use Honda MTF only.

Feel free to post whatever you like but you might want to contribute to the ‘repair central’ forum as that one is for how to repairs, this thread is for service and repair questions.

It seems that you were able to work out the other issues you were having so I’ll leave those be for now.
