Hello everyone.
The car that is having issue is a 95 Honda civic with 210K. When the car is in neutral and give gas, it sounds good. But whenever is in gear, the moment I give it gas, there is a winding noise. When I let go the gas, the noise goes away. It happens in all five gears. The noise sounds like is coming form the transmission area. There is no noise when engaging or disengaging the clutch. Any ideas?
Also, when I accelerate, the shifter moves back a little bit. Is this normal? - CreatorTopic

It could be your input shaft bearing.
August 25, 2013 at 7:02 am #540617if u post a video it would help a ton
August 25, 2013 at 7:13 am #540626The shifter movement is mostly in third and fifth gear, more in the third. It’s also hard to shift into the fourth gear. Sometime it felt like I have shifted into 4th gear, but it will skip into neutral when I give gas while the shifter is still in 4th gear. 🙁
I will try to record it.
August 25, 2013 at 10:20 am #540633I suggest it has a worn throw out bearing since it only makes the noise when your foot is on the clutch.
The shifter should move a little while accelerating as the engine is mounted in rubber mounts. If it moves a lot then it may have a worn engine mount.
I obviously gave the wrong answer…Don’t edit your original thread.
August 28, 2013 at 1:46 am #541034The shifter movement is likely due to worn bushings in the shift rod that goes between the trans and the shifter OR worn engine mounts. Check both. As for the noise it could be a main shaft bearing. If it was an input shaft bearing it would make noise in neutral. You might try changing the fluid with GM Syncromesh. After a couple of weeks the noise might go away, if not, then you may have to get in there and replace the main shaft bearing to see if that cures it.
August 31, 2013 at 6:21 am #541476Thanks Eric. I don’t think it has much to do with the input shaft bearing and throw out bearing neither. It doesn’t make noise when its in neutral with the clutch depressed or released.
Beside the noise, I’m having problem with the 4th gear. It feels softer when shifting in compare to rest of the gear. And also when shifting into 4th gear, it will pop out in to neutral when I give gas. What could that be?
I just got the GM Syncromesh fluid today. But if its something mechanically wrong inside the transmission, then I’m afraid it would be waste of money to change the fluid.September 2, 2013 at 10:44 pm #542120I didn’t say input shaft bearing or throwout bearing, I said main shaft bearing. As for the shifting, check the shift linkage and engine mounts as I suggested first.
September 7, 2013 at 11:54 pm #542962Oh, sorry, I agree with you. I was making commons on other posts….
I checked the engine mounts, and they are good. On the shift linkage, the bushings doesn’t seem to have much play. But the U joint part on the linkage is loose and can be rotate and move forth and back a little bit. I circle the part on the diagram. So a new linkage is what I need? I also uploaded a video with the u Joint part when shifting.

So I just drove it without the 4th for almost 6 months. And finally today, the whole transmission is giving up. When I shifted out of the 3rd gear as I was driving down the road today, it felt like the selector left in gear or something. With the shiftier in neutral, there was a awful grinding noise. I wasn’t able to shift in to any of the gear. Luckily, with a hard push and even worse grinding sound, I got into fifth gear and somehow got the thing(maybe the selector?) back out. And this happened a few more times until I reached home….
Ready for another tranny. :woohoo:
March 1, 2014 at 12:55 am #577706That’s unfortunate. Sorry to hear about that. BTW, the next time you check the shift linkage, put your hands directly on the linkage and try to move it up and down, left right. Just moving the shifter really isn’t going to tell you or us anything really. That doesn’t matter I suppose because as you stated your transmission is bad. Just be sure to use Honda fluid in the new transmission and it should last you a good long time.
Thanks for the update and keep us posted.
March 1, 2014 at 5:17 am #577825Yeah! Any suggestion on where to get a transmission? I am looking at this rebuild one. http://shop.synchrotech-transmissions.com/Honda-Civic-1992-1995-DX-LX-C9295-406.htm
Seem a little pricey to me, but much more reliable than the ones pull out from the junk yard.August 19, 2014 at 5:44 am #613887A super late update. 😉
The transmission replacement on my 95 honda civic was successful with the help of the Vmanual. The process was smooth overall with some pain in the rear end while removing the pin in the shiftier linkage, getting the bolt joint lose and lastly putting the transmission back up. It was a lot heavier then I could handle. I wasn’t able to do what Eric did in the video. The old transmission was pretty bad. The transmission fluid was really dirty even though is was only six months old. The speed sensor had metal shavings all over. I filled the new transmission with Honda fluids and it has been driven very nice.Just some pics form the job.
August 20, 2014 at 12:03 am #614059I’m glad you got that sorted. Thanks for the ‘late’ update and pics. Better late than never I suppose. I’m also glad to hear the VManual helped. I’m hoping to put out a couple more of those soon.
