manual gearbox whining

hey guys, i’ve tried doing some research on this issue but haven’t found a definitive answer to it so figured i’ll pick your brains for confirmation. i have a 4×4 with a manual 5 speed gearbox which can produce a very unhealthy sounding whine type noise mostly in 3rd under heavy acceleration or uphill load and slightly (but barely) noticeable in second. most similar issues are people saying input or output shaft bearing that’s worn out but well you’d hear it in every gear if that was the case, would anyone be able to provide a little insight on this as to whether it’s something like old cogs that have received abuse and just worn over time or a bearing directly related to that particular gear?

If it is happening in primarily in a single gear, then it cannot be something that would affect all gears (as you said).

If I were to guess, I would say the only way to see for sure what is wrong is to tear into the transmission and look at the third gear as well as the synchro and everything else.

hopefully it’s an isolated issue, been trying to sell the ute for ages, i queried the noise when i bought it and the mechanic just told me it’s common in fords/mazda but didn’t really provide any info on the noise, good call on the synchro too if i got into there as a handful of times (less than 5) i’ve known it to slip up and cause an awful crunch trying to get into gear although it goes in just fine 99% of the time. here’s for hoping it’s not my problem for too much longer

            Update:
put fresh oil in this weekend and found the last time it was done it had been overfilled, good 200-400ml poured out the fill plug on pretty level surface and found a small number of metal shards as well as what i’d assume to be normal filings on the drain plug magnet that wouldn’t be of concern, can’t help but wonder what the damage related to the chips and shards are though, ahh the joys of old cars…

Gearbox whining is usually syncros gone bad of some of the gears inside the transmission having “lost” bits of their teeths etc. ie stuff that makes it “harder” for the transmission to achieve a full and perfect contact between each gear leading to more noise.
