      Hi everyone,

So first things, My technician says to put the least money in my car because he say it will not last long.

So I’m here the have a second advice from all of you.

We plugged the code reader in today and we got 3 different codes one p0300 and another one for intake vacuum leak and one for too rich that I can’t remember the exact code but I believe it’s the p0172.

The wires has been changed already and that made no difference at all… So I brought it back and asked them to change the spark plugs and maybe the coil pack.

Also, I’m hearing a noise in the engine itself that looks like a lifter according to what I saw on youtube but I can be mistaken as the technician said it was a piston ring. I made a video of the noise I am talking about here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=14pBP5Ff4y4

It is also my first car I ever own so I am new to all of this!

      Thank you!

          Sounds like piston slap….

Too Common in GM engines… More about it here…

          http://www.pistonslap.com/tsb.htm

With your codes, all you can do is find out where your vacuum leak is and repair it and see if your other code goes away…

The P0300 is a multiple/unknown cylinders misfiring… Not good, can be fuel injectors, spark plugs and internal mechanical issues…

Sorry, but I have no good news for you….

Those engines had a friction coating applied to the pistons at the factory and is prone to coming off and leaving a higher piston clearance to the cylinder wall. I think that’s at least some of the noise I hear and the reason your tech said not to spend money on it.

I know of one that has been noisy for 3 or 4 years and still going but that’s no guaranty.

I think you have a vacuum leak somewhere based on the codes given. There are vacuum lines that run from the top of the throttle body to the PCV valve, Fuel pressure regulator and MAP sensor. Be sure none of then are split or broken. An intake manifold gasket leak is possible as they are a high failure rate item.

At this point is it worth to get the gasket changed? How long does it normally take to change that gasket on that type of engine?

Unless the car is running poorly or not able to pass a smog test I wouldn’t panic about repairing it. Check the hoses I mentioned for leaks first. If the rest of the car is in good condition you may decide to have another engine installed.

For now keep the oil topped up and drive it sensibly until you decide what to do.

Alright, I will see how it goes tomorrow when i go back at the garage.

                    Thanks!

The Spark plugs has been changed as well as the check engine reset and it seems to run better on idle but the RPM is going up and down a couple of time before stabilizing at ~800 RPM. I also noticed that when I’m a half throttle it seems to be going up and down too and stop when I release and push again on it.

They also checked for vacuum leaks and didn’t find any…

Should I change the Coils pack or try something cheaper first?

                      Thanks

You have a vacuum leak somewhere as indicated by the codes… Also, the rpms changing is a good indicator as well, the engine is trying to balance out the unmetered air getting in…

Keep looking for the vacuum leak, you may need it put on a smoke machine to find it… Oftentimes you can find them with propane (not lit) or spraying carb cleaner around vacuum hoses and the intake plenum/manifold… When the RPMs rise, you have found your leak… Many times small cracks occur in vacuum lines that can’t easily be found…. Eric did a video on how to find these leaks as well as scotty kilmer with cigar smoke…
