I noticed a burnt/deformed electrical connector unplugged on the wiring harness when I went to do an oil change on an ’01 Altima.
I touched it and it fell off the wire. I looked around and found that the oil sender was unplugged. It appears the mechanic who worked on this car previously unplugged it or burnt it, when he was replacing the notorious leaking intake manifold gasket that plagues these cars (ETCG made a video about that).
Now I’ve got to fix it. The female connector on the wiring harness fell off and is otherwise destroyed so I only have the male connector on the sender itself. I can’t solder anything on to that because it’s stainless steel. Does anyone know of any fastener that can provide pressure to grip on to the male connector along with copper wire? I have some 22awg braided automotive wire to use.
My plan is to somehow get that wire connected to the sender, once that’s done I only need to worry about the other end of the wire that has to connect to the wiring harness. For that side I’m going to strip the insulation off of the remains of the broken wire from the harness, do a lineman splice between that harness wire and the wire I connected to the sender, solder between them and put some heatshrink wire wrap on the solder joint. The sender would now be permanently connected to the harness but I don’t anticipate taking this off.
Could there maybe be some kind of crimp connector I could use? Here’s a picture of the male connector on the sender I can work with, looks like a flat blade:
