      I have a 2001 lexus IS300
      engine: 2jz ge

today I replaced the cam and crank seals and put in a new adjustable cam gear
so we put everything back together and tried to rotate the engine but it wasn’t turning so we left it right now I have the two cam gears set to 60 degrees BEFORE TOP DEAD CENTER but the crank pully went out of time how do get it back on time with out bending the valves and taking of the head .
in the pictures the dots are 60 degrees before TOP DEAD CENTER and the next marking to it is top dead center ?

Oh… I didn’t realize you had your cam and crank sprockets off…. Just re-install them…..

Then install the pulley bolt and rotate the crank any way it will go to move… The reverse won’t matter because you don’t have the belt on, so it won’t do any damage to the valvetrain…. also, the procedure you posted is for just an R and R of the belt so that ship has sailed…

With the cam sprockets installed, turn the cam sprockets clockwise until you get them in position… If they won’t move due to the pistons being in the way, move the crank again and try to get everything lined back up and reinstall the belt….

You just have to go around again, so to speak…

well right now the belt is off and the cam sprocket are set to 60 degrees BTDC so what your saying is trail and error ?

if you cant figure it out, and you want to make sure to do it rite, just take valve cover(s) off, and take all the pressure off the valvs, by loosening the cam bolts…with them loose the valvs are going to be seated, and no chance of bending the valves…then turn crank to where it needs to be, and reinstall cams to where you want them set…and replace the belt and vwalah…more work, but less chance to destroy your top end…also make sure your plugs are out, to make the crank easier to turn over. Had to do the same thing on my integra, and it ended up working fine

yes take the cams out, and your valvs will be closed! and the pistons will have a 0% chance to touch them! then start by putting bottom end in time, and then replace the cams how you want them to sit! MAKE SURE TO TAKE YOUR TIME PUTTING CAMS BACK!! bc if they are off too much you have a chance to mes them up anyways.

I would just go ahead and do it. And get it out of the way. No telling when a valve will get bumped while fishing around to find tdc

If you still do not understand what I am saying, an alternate way is to remove the camshafts…. Will take a bit longer…. ensure when you re-install that you torque the cam journal bearing bolts to spec…

Question if I remove the cam shaft and when I’m ready to install them would I need to measure for valve clearance ? Or do I just take them on out and reinstall them the same way I pulled them out?

It shouldnt change much if any at all! You can check them when you replace the cams, and they are super super easy to adjust on most cars! ETCG has a video on this as well

Could you possibly link the video I wish I could replace them on a bugdet. Just trying to get things back together .

                            edit:

here is a video of what i have right now thats all the vvti ccam gear moves and i didnt try to move the other one as u can see the white timing mark is off and if you look at 1:31 close you can see the sub timing mark (yellow)

I also agree that even though it may take longer in this case removing the cams might make it easier for you. Its your car not a customers car so taking your time isn’t a bad thing.

Cams out-all valves closed with no chance of them being hit by the pistons. Rotate crank to proper marks, and re install cams to proper spec.

Like 90acuraintegra sudgested removing the spark plugs makes it far easier to rotate the crank.

When you re install the cam shafts make sure you put some oil on all the bearing surfaces before install and then pour a little on the lobes.

I will remove the plugs and see how it rotates if not i will take out the cam shafts . do you think i will have to measure or adjust valve clearance ? being that i am just putting back in the stock cam shafts @ 60 degress BTDC along with the crank @ 60 degrees BTDC

shouldn! But its always good to double check all of the work done Its super easy to check the clearence.

Thats erics vid of adjusting valvs

what would happen if I don’t check the clearance on the valve or adjust it since im just putting back the OEM cam shaft ?
