      I have a 2001 lexus IS300
      engine: 2jz ge

today I replaced the cam and crank seals and put in a new adjustable cam gear
so we put everything back together and tried to rotate the engine but it wasn’t turning so we left it right now I have the two cam gears set to 60 degrees BEFORE TOP DEAD CENTER but the crank pully went out of time how do get it back on time with out bending the valves and taking of the head .
in the pictures the dots are 60 degrees before TOP DEAD CENTER and the next marking to it is top dead center ?

Good call… The JZ VVTi engines are an interference engine and testing it before you got it all back together saved you from killing this head….

You will need to turn the crankshaft counter-clockwise back to probably between (10-30 BTDC is a guess) to a position where all the pistons are clear….

Don’t worry about turning the crank backwards, the belt won’t be hooked up (which you don’t want to turn valvetrain backwards) and it will be for less than a whole turn…

When you find the sweet spot, slowly turn the cam sprockets back into position in a clockwise manner…

If at any time if you feel harsh resistance, stop… and re-check… Go slow…

Get everything back to position and re-install belt… (I advise using zip ties to keep things in place until the tensioner is released)…

        Good luck…

hey thanks for your reply man so just to clarify turning it back to BTDC 60 mark on the crank pulley would be safe with the cam gears at 60 degrees BTDC ? I was feeling resistance which is why I stopped and came here for a little advised to make sure I didnt bend no valves or have to remove the head .

Preferably turn everything clockwise… You should be able to go one direction or another… If you cannot, then you will need to SLOWLY turn the cam sprockets clockwise until you are able to move the crank again toward the timing mark…

if I turn them clockwise that would put them on TDC but it would still be out of time since that white mark on the crank is TDC and its way off from the zero marking on the case . I tried to turn them but I get resistance so maybe I should just try to rotate the crank counter clock wise back to the yellow 60 degree mark . is there any chance of bending with the cam gears at 60 degrees ?

You have the timing belt off still, correct?

The goal is to re-turn everything back into position, starting with the crank…Don’t worry about the position of the cam sprockets yet… Just get them moving in the right direction… The key thing is to get the crank into a position which allows you to move the cam sprockets back into position…..

Yeah right now its off since we realized the timing was off . so I just set the cam gears to 60 degrees BTDC and left the crank alone because I was unsure since I got some resistance

okay I will try to get the crank back in the BTDC by turning it counter clock wise and I will post a update

Also, did you install the VVT actuator properly?

                        Install hand tight
                        Unlock the actuator
                        Torque to spec
Turn the actuator til it locks…

I am not sure if this may be the issue, I see you have your cam sprockets correctly on the sub timing marks….. However, are you focusing on the crank pulley sub-timing mark as well? The crank pulley has two marks as well… The sub timing mark should be 60 degrees clockwise (to the right) of the main timing mark and it (the sub timing mark) should be set on TDC (0 degrees) when you install the timing belt… I think your picture is showing the main timing mark… the sub timing mark should be to the right of that one (60 degrees)… that is the one you want to ensure is lined up…

yeah my cam sprockets are on the sub timing mark but my crank passed it. I believe which makes me want to turn it counter clock wise to get it on the sub timing mark . that white mark u see on the crack pully is the timing mark but it should be on the yellow sub timing mark

Well, That is the procedure to remove the tension on the belt and to set the cam sprockets and crank to the proper position for belt removal and installation….

You have to get it here to re-install the belt…

that’s what I am trying to do but how do I do that since my crank and cam sprockets are off do forward the cams or counter clock the crank ?
