major stumble while driving 96 ACCORD

      1996 accord LX 2.2L 4cy mileage: 123,678
      my car “stumbles” or “surges” while im driving, happens after the car reaches 55mph going down the highway at a steady cruise. i just had my timing belt and valve adjustment done at honda, it started stumbling when i was driving to work the next day. thinking maybe it was something they did, i brought it back to the dealership to see if they could diagnose. they cant figure out what the issue is. they told me to replace my IAC, o2 sensor, plugs and wires, so i did. the issue still remains. ive been to the dealership 7 times in the past 2 weeks. no codes are popping up. I’m convinced the EGR passages are clogged, the shop foreman said that i would have to drill holes to clean them.. is this true?

        I am assuming that the car behaves itself at idle and slower driving speeds.

        If it is that erratic (surges and stumbles), I am inclined to think it is a PCM/ECU (Computer) problem or sensors. I don’t see MAP sensor mentioned in your post. Perhaps have that tested.

        I would think a bad timing belt and bad valve adjustment would cause problems at all driving speeds, especially at idle – although I am not a Honda Tech.

          it’s all been tested. my map is fine. I answered my own question. pulled up the fuel rail and 2 of the passages were clogged. I had a look at the egr itself, looked mad gunky. might have been getting stuck open intermittently, I’ cleaned it but I’ll prob just end up replacing it. car runs great now.

            so the EGR valve is what caused the surges and stumbling interesting. I should check my 03 Accord’s EXV6 EGR valve for any blockage. so no codes where showing it was clogged?

                  I would think if the EGR was the issue, it would have been there before they did the timing belt. It is a known issue that if you don’t get the balance belt correctly positioned you will have a hesitation similar to what you describe after a timing belt replacement. I would suggest you take it back to them and have them inspect the timing belt and balance belt to see if they are in time correctly. If not, have them reset it and see if the issue is still there.

                    before going back to the honda AGAIN i did A LOT of reading and re-traced my steps on all the work ive done myself on the car. the o2 sensor was the ultimate issue here. i kept replacing it with a super cheap one LOL. only got a day or so out of it and then it failed and caused the stumbling (in the engine and in my brain). never threw a code though, which i read is pretty common thing. i installed a Denso and now the car is running like new. if i hadn’t taken a chance putting in a cheap sensor i would’ve never looked into this forum, the egr passages, fuel injectors, etc. cleaning and gained the knowledge, experience 🙂 ..and most importantly not to use cheap parts haha. i have also learned that dealerships kind of suck when it comes to car repair (although this dealership was nice, worked with me answering questions and didn’t keep charging me diagnostic fees). in some circumstances cars should be treated like patients and an accurate history needs to be given to be able to see the underlying problem and diagnose, you cant just pull the codes and treat the symptoms ¯_(ツ)_/¯

                      Glad you got that fixed. Autozone especially has made a killing with the downed economy and it’s a shame as NAPA has even lowered the quality of their parts to stay competitive. For some parts, cheap is ok. For electronics…rarely is that the case.
