Loud Road Noise?

Tough time figuring this out…My tires are good year with good tread, correct tire pressure, and seem to be balanced (no pulling to one side or vibration in the steering wheel). Brakes are good, just passed a pretty thorough state inspection, and I can’t seem to figure out what’s causing my loud road noise?

Whenever I drive, I can hear VERY loud road noise and it gets louder the faster I go.
The noise gets louder when accelerating and quieter when decelerating.
Pushing in the clutch at any speed has no affect on the noise. It’s still there and follows my actual speed.
When taking sharp turns the noise neither increases or decreases.

What the heck is causing it???

Is it a clicking noise? Maybe the cv joints or wheel bearing? Look into one of ETCGs videos on locating vehical noise he uses jacks stands to jack the car up and put it into drive so you can listen to the outside of the car good luck sir!

I have actually had something as simple as a dust shield/heat shield rattle, and annoy the crap out of me until I found it. Like the other guy said though, I would check wheel bearings, CV joints, link pins, and also front end gear oil. Low gear oil in the front end can cause a loud whirling type noise you might hear in the vehicle. Good luck!

Good tips guys thanks. I’ll have to get some ramps and then set the jacks to check for the noise. I’m leaning on wheel bearings myself as the gear oil is near full. It’s just odd that there aren’t other signs of wheel bearings.

Kind of sounds like I have huge oversize tires with thick treads…if that helps for the noise comparison.

            Thanks for the replies.

There’s some tires that start out quiet and as they wear they get noisy. If you rotate the tires it makes it worse. Tires that do this are generally sold as performance tires.

The easiest way to tell if this is your problem is to go to Tire Rack, look up your tire and read the reviews.

#1 cause of a noise like that is tires. You might try rotating them to see if the noise changes or goes away. If it does, it’s your tires. Some tires are better than others. Goodyears aren’t the greatest and keeping quiet in my experience. More information specifically on this problem can be found here.

Good luck and keep us posted.
