      I have a 94 4×4 with with a 4.0 5 speed manual tranny with 137XXX miles.
A few weeks ago it became hard to shift, Hard to go into gear and come out(all gears).
Checked it out and saw the clutch slave was toast, So i replaced it along with the clutch since the tranny was already out. Got it all back together bled the system but the problem was still there, Still hard going in and out of gear. I decided to park the truck for a while because i didn’t have time to further diagnosis.
Well today decided to re bleed the system thinking maby there was still air in the system and then took it for a test drive. Still was hard in and out of gear, Then a few moments after shifting to 3rd gear it dropped, The engine just revved. Pulled over tried all gears and for some reason all gears slide in like butter now but i have no 3rd gear. When driving now all gears slide in like it should, Nice and smooth. 3rd feels like it drops in but it does nothing, no grinding, no noise, engin just revs. But if i put it in 3rd gear and push hard on the shifter in with the clutch out, the truck trys to move, yet still no grinding or noise nothing,

There was no warning that there was a problem other than the hard shifting, Tranny didn’t wine, Grind, no vibration, full fluid.
Any ideas what happened? think it is best to replace the transmission it or fix it?

What make is the vehicle? If the other gears work except for
3rd.sounds like 3rd is broken in the trans. Something was broken
and now is clear.thats why everything else became free. You will
need to go into the tranny. Is there a cover you can remove to view
the gears? look for a broken gear.

Was there lube in the transmission. If it was low that could explain all of your problems.

dont know how i forgot to add the make of truck but
            its a ford ranger

there is a cover i can remove to look inside, tranny needs to come out before i can take the cover off. but the tranny needs to come out to swap/ repair it any way lol.

yes the tranny has fluid in it. I checked it 5 minutes before i took it for the test drive and lost 3rd. somewhat fresh fluid it also. changed about 5k miles ago.

Parts for those transmissions are gold. I would try to find a used one with a decent warranty.

+1 It sounds like you have a broken gear. Pull the trans. easy on this car.look for broken gears.you might be lucky could be a $50 dollar gear.
