I seem to be losing my passion to being a tech. I love working on cars at home cause i can do it on my own pace and no one breathing down my neck.but starting to hate it as a career. any advice? 🙁

That seems to be a common problem for most. It’s hard to hold onto a passion when it becomes a “job”. May be best to retain your passion by pursuing a career in a different field in order to still love working on cars when you get the chance. However, you may learn how to make a career out of being a technician and still love working on cars. It’s all in the mind set, and how you deal with things. Also, it may not be the job that’s making you lose the passion, but where you work. So be sure to analyze that as well.

Maybe it’s time to go out on your own? I’ve found myself lately losing passion as well. I’ve begun planning a shop and a location and that act alone has reinvigorated me somewhat.

Are you taking enough vacation? I’ve found this extremely important in maintaining sanity and passion.

As time goes by and the sense of routine grows more present it can be tough to find new things to keep life fresh. Maybe try planning a social event where you work? Just a thought.

If you’re wrenching for a living, posting on Eric’s forums and watching Eric’s videos then there’s no doubt in my mind you love what you do. Just need to find a way to make it fresh.

I wish you the best of luck and finding the right path for you. Don’t give up as we’re losing too many good technicians in our trade.

          Cheers!

Common issue. The same here. Loved cars all my life, since I was like 7 y.o. Now this constant feeling of being under-appreciated for what I can doing and for what I am dong – that is what sucking passion away from my work. Gotta go on my own again (I rather like dealing with customers anyway) or leave automotive. May try and find some industrial tech job if there are any that requires skills in all things electrics and electronics and pays well for them (this is my favorite area but the worst paid in motor trade at the same time).

I was a GM technician for 8 years and left in April for many reasons. Dealership politics were driving me crazy. Not getting paid for things, especially warranty!! Left and went to the marine/recreational vehicle industry, best move I ever made.
