I have a 1996 firebird and the steering is real loose and the steering wheel you can turn it left and right about a 1/4 of a foot before it engages. I need to adjust it but I’m not to sure on how to do that. If someone can tell me how to do that I would be very greatful. I’m familiar with all the parts but just need a helping hand on what to do. Thanks a million to everyone who’s helped me with my other posts It’s helped me 100%

That was an issue on one of my Dodge trucks. This problem was the steering box needed replacement.

As mentioned above you first need to find out what actually IS loose as there could be several things from the steering wheel itself to the tie rod ends. While the car is off try moving the wheel from side to side and see if you can put your eyes on the linkage going to the steering wheel, pay particular attention to the U joints and any other connections you see. If you don’t see anything there then check the front suspension by jacking up the front of the vehicle and do a good inspection of all the parts related to the steering, the rack, the tie rod ends and even the ball joints and other parts, you could have more than one thing loose so be sure to be thorough in your inspection. I know this video is on ‘noises’ but it will show how to inspect the front end.
