Looking to replace fuel injectors

Hi all,

I have a 2003 Dodge Dakota with just shy of 170,000 miles on it. It still runs very well and has been the most reliable, lowest out-of-the-ordinary maintenance truck I’ve ever owned. It even has the original factory battery. I should replace it though… It has lost a significant amount of power and torque over the years, but no other complaints. I used to be able to break the rear wheels loose by accident and I can’t anymore like I used to. I’m looking to replace the fuel injectors anyway because they’re ten years old now. I suspect they are part of the reason for my power loss. I don’t want to spend $500 on new Bosch injectors that the factory put in. Rock Auto offers a few remanufactured options and several aftermarket options. Frankly I don’t like the idea of either of those. If I run solvent through the fuel rails like Eric did in one of his recent videos, will the injectors be restored to a significantly cleaner state for a few years? Or should I just bite the bullet and replace my existing ones with remanufactured injectors? Anyone with experience on this topic, your input is greatly appreciated.

I wouldn’t replace the injectors. If you flush them they should be clean. I replaced the same injector three times on a caravan with a rebuilt and they all had the same heat related problem so it’s easy to end up with more problems than you started with.

If you are not having problems with the injectors, I would not waste your money on replacing them. The detergent in gasoline is far below the amount needed to keep the spray tips clean. You can do an injector service or run about three bottles of a good brand of cleaner through your tank.

I run a cleaner for 2-3 tanks and then put a shot of Marvels Mystery oil in my tank to clean & lubricate the injectors because the ethanol is quite abrasive. I use one of the Lucas fuel treatment bottles as a measure for the MMO and it is good for around 12 gallons.

Amsoil makes a really awesome cleaner additive called PI, and Power Foam to clean the throttle body. check it out on their website for more info or to locate a dealer.

You may also clean your MAF just get the correct cleaner for that. ScannerDan has a good video on that.

are you getting a misfire or running rough? any codes?
loss of power can be a few things. Maf dirty, spark plugs,
fuel pressure, charging system not at the proper voltage.
What evidence points to the injectors?

I would start with a fuel filter change. I used fuel injector cleaners before, I am not really a fan of them. The only way to properly clean an injector is by removing it a cleaning. Ill attach a video. AS for the loss of power start with a good tune up.
