      Hi there !

My grandfather is giving me his minivan, a Kia Sedona 2005 with only 32000 kms. The downside is the van has started since almost 5 years now. I know I will need the change all four tires since they are all flat ( I have 4 with me of the same size ) and all four brakes.

I’m wondering what I’ll need to do before starting the engine. I have to flush all the fluids and remove the old gas. Do I need to do something before or after flushing or I just flush and refill ? Also, how to I remove the old gas from the tank ?

      Thanks !

Hello and welcome to the ETCG forum!

Yep, change all the fluids. Maybe disconnect the ignition and crank it to pre lube it and make sure the engine turns over. Maybe change the fuel filter or something. You seem like you have a good head on your shoulders about it. Just be practical.

I finally succeed ! The van is running great ! I changed all the fluids, remove the old gas, changed the serpentine belts, changed the front brakes. I just need to changed the upstream O2 sensors as they have no activity what so ever.

I would probly replace the PVC and do another oil change in like 1000 miles or so…. because you have all the gunk and grease that is the old oil in the system… you will have to wait for it to all desalve but I would redo an oil change in like 1K miles or so… just to flush it out…I would also rec trans pan too… with the fuild siting in it not moving could cause problems…. but beond that the battory is probly shoot because battorys only last about 3-5 years… you can have an auto part store test it for you but beyond that just check the service intervals and see what needs to be changed or done
also tires when they sit could form dry rot, but I thought u said you replaced them

Thanks for the input on the PCV Valve, I didn’t think about it.

As for the tranny fluid, the battery and the tires, I already changed them. The tranny fluid was not red at all, I didn’t take any chances. The battery was dead and I didn’t even try to charge or boost it. As for the tires, they didn’t hold air and they was all cracked.

I already put a note in my schedule to flush the oil. I thought I could put some seafoam into the crankcase to clean the gunk in the engine. Is that a good idea ?

“There are two kinds of people in the world, my friend. Those who swear by Seafoam, and those who swear at it.”

Personally, I prefer to let the oil do the job of cleaning out deposits.

I have 2 codes now on my Sedona. P0154 and P0134. I’ve check on Google and it could be many things. I know when I remove the intake manifold, I didn’t changed the gasket. I saw somewhere the codes could be cause by an intake leak. Could it be that ? I will check tomorrow the live data on the 02 sensors and keep you posted.

So I checked today the live data. When the van was idling, the O2 sensors had no activity at all. When I elevated the idle at about 2500 RPM, the O2 sensors were acting normally. So, I suspected the gaskets on the intake manifold and the throttle body so I changed them, and now the van runs perfectly !

                    Problem solved !!

thats odd for no activity on the O2 sencors… Im thinking you might have a loose correction bor maybe a bad wire in that case…. so if you have the problem again i would check that… uselly the o2 sensors will give you wild resolts when you have a vacuum leak

I forgot to tell I changed the O2 sensors also. When I checked for a the wires and connections, the heater broke in my hand on both sensors. I checked the connections and the were all good and there was no wire rubbing on the exhaust.

Before I changed the gaskets, there was no activity and when I put my foot on the gas pedal, the sensors were like normal. As I release the pedal, no activity again.
