Can you give us a little more info please ? the year , make and model as well as the milage. do you have a cel light on ? has the car had a tune up recently ? does the battery turn the motor over properly or does it feel like a weak battery ? any additional info you can provide will greatly assist us in helping you.
January 14, 2012 at 11:00 am #448759you need three things to start a car. fuel air spark. check to see if you have fuel being supplied. next check that you have spark. next air. is your air filter clean.
good luck keep us postedJanuary 14, 2012 at 11:00 am #448760Does it do this on every start, or is it only after it’s sat for a period of time, like over night?
January 14, 2012 at 11:00 am #448761Start with a test of the fuel pressure. then I would do a compression test – check compression both dry and wet. how is the timing ? make sure it is set right. check the distributor cap and rotor for excessive wear. this has an hei distributor may have a coil going out ( check for a ” strong ” spark )
January 14, 2012 at 11:00 am #448762I would definitely start with checking the fuel pressure with KOEO and KOER and compare specifications to factory values.
If you loose fuel pressure a soon as your engine is turned off, you can suspect possibly a faulty check valve in the fuel pump.If you have a vacuum operated fuel pressure regulator, i would pull the vacuum hose off and see if you can see or smell gasoline. If you do, you may have a leaking fuel pressure regulator. You can also run the vehicle with this hose unplugged, wait a few minutes and see if it starts to leak.
Also looking at fuel trim values on a scan tool can give you alot of info. Faulty ECT’s can also cause hard starts.

January 15, 2012 at 11:00 am #448763+1 on checking fuel pressure it may be that the check valve in the fuel pump is bleeding off pressure or some other issue. This video might help explain what I’m talking about.
January 15, 2012 at 11:00 am #448764Would a ’96 be returnless? I’m trying to remember when the switchover happened. If not, the fuel pressure regulator could be letting fuel dump right back into the tank if it’s leaking vacuum.
January 15, 2012 at 11:00 am #448765I think GM’s were still using return type systems back in the 90’s.
Im sure one of our GM tech’s can clear that up for us.

January 16, 2012 at 11:00 am #448766You might also want to check the fuel pump relay. I think the fuel pump can also be powered through the oil pressure sender on that car. If you can’t hear the fuel pump prime for a couple of seconds when you turn the key to on, or the car starts right back up when it’s warm, your relay might be bad.

Thats actually a good valid point as well.
I think your issue is fuel pressure related rather than electrical though.
