Anyone know whether or not liquid gasket is necessary when replacing the rear main seal on a 94 accord?

When I removed the seal and its housing I noticed liquid gasket residue, but the kit I have for my replacement comes with gaskets. My manual is mum on the topic.

On the shaft seal itself, no liquid gasket on the part that touches the crankshaft, some on the outer part that presses into the seal housing only if the housing is damaged where the seal presses in.

Seal housing to the block, a little grey silicone can’t hurt even if there is a physical gasket there. It seems that it is not silicone gasket only, so don’t lay a bead down. Just wipe a this film of ultra grey on the seal housing and the block and then install it with the gasket normally.

Maybe silicone gasket shouldn’t be there at all, but someone with my attitude has already done it before. You should clarify if here was also a physical gasket present in addition to the liquid gasket residue when you took it apart. If it’s not supposed to have any liquid gasket, it is not necessary if the sealing surfaces are free from marring or scratches. It is ok to use a thin/small amount anyway as some insurance, but don’t overdo it.

I think, we have misconception here. Liquid gasket is gasket that actually seals a surface without a different material, rubber, or other similar feature one. Metal. Fiber.
Liquid gasket is applied in liquid form and then fills properly designed provisions for it and then turns into a semi rigid state. It is my understanding that for that type of gasket, surface should be accordingly designed and definitely not in a 94 vehicle. I have water pump sealed with this on my 07 Camry, but that’s 07.
What OP is referring to is likely simple sealant that some zealot applied “just in case”.

I should probably be a bit more specific:

The residue was not around the seal itself – it was on the surface between the seal housing and the engine. The seal replacement kit came with a gasket (one of those flimsy sort of paperish things cut to fit between the back of the housing and the engine). When I originally removed the seal and housing there was not a gasket, just the residue which I assume was the sealant.

Ended up just using the gasket that came with this kit. Although, unfortunately, I over-torqued the very last bolt when reattaching the housing and broke off the head. It’s one of ten other bolts though and that seal housing was kind of a PITA to get off of the oil pan so I left it be. Fingers crossed…
