Got a p0401 code “EGR Flow Insufficent Detected”. Changed the DPFE sensor, and cleaned the MAF sensor and still can’t get rid of this code. Just wondering what the life span is for an EGR Valve. I’ve got a ’01 Ford Ranger, 4.0L SOHC With 300,000kms. I belive it’s stuck closed, because of all the carbon build up. There’s no vaccum when I pull of the nipple part off the top of the EGR, Engine still runs fine, so it’s due for a cleaning. I wasn’t sure if getting a new one after the cleaning would be worth my $, if it’s to last for the life of the vehicle. I know i’ve got alot of mileage, so that’s why i’m asking if anybody knows what the life expectancy of an EGR Valve? Any input wolud be a great!

I’ve got almost 300,000 miles on the one for my 1886 Dodge Neon and it’s still going.

1886? Wow! That’s an early one.. Haha!

I have had egr problems two or three times. It is now blocked off on my van (122ci twin cam turbo diesel- 192,000 miles/308,000kms) and it still runs fine and passes emissions without it. For the original poster – if you’re cleaning stuff like that yourself, make sure you use the appropriate product and not just a rusty can of carburettor cleaner. Crc make some good products I understand that may fill your needs.

These video’s by Scanner Danner should be of some help.

That code is for insufficient flow so you may have a clogged EGR passage.

Thanks Everyone For Your Input. Changed The DPFE Sensor, to emliminate it. Got a diagnosis that the EGR was sticking at times. so it needed and new EGR.
