OK so honestly how much does being ase certified really matter or is just for people to brag?
im new to cars tbh and already the few people ive talk to have seemed like ase certification is a joke.
i wanna know if i am putting to much effort in to getting it or if its worth it.

Imho certification is a way of proving to a potential customer or employer that you know what you are doing. Sure you can get a job without it but you may be able to negotiate a better wage with your certs.

I think that ASE Certification just means that you can pass a test. I know some guys who have it and they said getting it is stupidly easy and doesn’t necessarily mean that one knows what they’re doing.

Some employers require it. IMO I agree with gmule it shows your employer you have some knowledge. I know a few fairly smart cookies who think ase is a joke but their dealer doesn’t require it. Me personally I’m taking them for my own satisfaction.

Knowledge is shown by a combination of experience and paper. I’ve seen a master ASE tech that couldn’t even adjust a clutch.
ASE is a piece of paper that proves mental knowledge. Actual wrench experience is a whole ‘nother ball game. Some will say that you need 2 years work experience to attain such certification, however 2 years certainly does not make a master tech(master ASE doesn’t count) nor does it prove competency.
You can be a tire/oil jockey and attain the certs provided you served your two years.

Certification really is important. We should go by the mandate of whatever state we’re in. It doesn’t mean that you had it easily that it’s worthless.

It wouldn’t hurt to have it. If you want to make a career of something, having certifications at least looks good.
