Leaky Tire

Rear tire has a small leak to it. Put air in it Sunday and decided to pull it off on Monday since it wasnt retaining fully. Nothing obvious is protruding from it.

Should I try Fix a Flat or take it to someone and get it patched?

I am worried that if I take it to someone there will want to replace the tire since the thread is in the yellow and I want it fixed and want more use out of it.

      Thanks!

You may want to figure out where the leak is coming from… Try a spray bottle mixture of dishwashing soap and water and spray all over the tire and observe for bubbles…

It could be you have a bead not sealing well (for many reasons) or a small puncture somewhere… if the damage/puncture is in the sidewall, just replace the tire… If it is in the center tread area, it may be repairable..

I don’t recommend fix a flat… That is just for emergencies to get you where you have to go to get the tire repaired properly (it even says this on the instructions)

Also definitely don’t use it unless it is an absolute emergency when you have TPMS…

The proper way to repair is with a patch… A plug can be used, but it should also only be used as a temporary repair (although I know many people who continue to drive on plugged tires)….

I am not sure what thread is in yellow means, (maybe tread is in yellow area of tire tread gauge), but if that is the case, then you have some tire life left but it is getting close..

Never use fix a flat unless you absolutely have to. As a technician I’ve seen it do very bad things. Including maim a guy for life. It also makes it so you can’t properly balance the tire. You might find this information helpful.

Good luck and keep us posted.

I have a 30 gallon portable air compressor. Its a good unit except the tires on it kept going flat. Being they are on an air compressor it wasn’t that big of deal but eventually got annoying. So, I put the Fix a Flat in them. They still went flat. It rolls on solid wheels now.

I have a lot of faith in the soap bubble method of leak detection. For basically zero cost, it is a very sensitive method. No leak fails to blow a bubble.
