I’ve used AutoEngunity before, and it seems to work reasonably well. You can add on modules for specific makes and models as well. I think it’s about $250.00 for the initial set up (generic OBD II), and each additional module is another $200.00 or so. It’s still not cheap, but well below the SnapOn prices.

If you’re looking to go really cheap, and have an Android phone, look up Torque in the Android Market. It works well, seems to get upgraded weekly, and interfaces flawlessly with a cheap ELM327 bluetooth adaptor that I bought off eBay for about $20.00.

I know I’ve posted this a few times but this is what I use. (Rather a video that I made about what I used)

Looks like they’re even cheaper now.

Mine is just a really cheap setup and doesn’t have advanced functions, but it was cheaper than a hand-held.

The new Bluetooth OBDII scanners that work with smartphones look pretty decent if you are interested.
Here is one that works with android phones. http://www.plxkiwi.com/kiwibluetooth/

I spent some time on that website and it does sound attractive. Since I already have access to laptop computers, it looks like this would be less expensive than a stand alone device. I don’t see any mention of the ability to turn devices in the car on and off, so I assume that even the pro software upgrade doesn’t allow that. However I do see that there is a ford and gm and mazda software bundle for about $80 each, so maybe those upgrades would include that functionality. When you start adding up the incremental cost, I’m still looking at a few hundred dollars for what I want. Having access to real time data with sensor data would be a big upgrade from my little code reader.

Thanks for the help, i think i am going to go for the autoenginuity. It looks like it does most of what i want and the price is not to high. Thanks a lot all,
                  Josh
