Finally finished installing PS Pump on 2001 Sienna, bled the system for about an hour (turning the wheel back and forth, turning the engine on for a couple seconds, repeat process) and noticed a regular knocking sound coming from the pump, and a slight turbulence in the reservoir that seems timed with the knocking sound, which is a regular tapping/knocking sound. This can be seen/heard in this video: https://vid.me/JGKT

The pump doesn’t seem to be loose or moving around, although I did have to remove the mounting bracket to get the pump loose, (I have no idea why this isn’t in the FSM or Haynes) and reinstall with the top mounting bolt, because there is not enough room to slide that bolt in to the mounting bracket while the mounting bracket is installed. I tightened it down pretty tight as I could but couldn’t find the torque specs.

Could the pump be defective, or a loose bolt? Or more air in the system?

There is also something like the sound a saw cutting through wood when the wheel is turned to either side: https://vid.me/jScW Is this related or normal?

Did you have the front of the car elevated above the rear when you bled the air out?

Is the pump new OEM, reman, or aftermarket?

Yeah, I had the rear elevated about the rear. The pump is new, although I made the mistake a couple days ago of trying to bleed it while it was running for the first time, and it made a horrible squealing noise, and erupted transmission fluid out of the reservoir like a 5th grade science experiment. I turned it off and found a leak in the low-pressure reservoir to pump hose, turned out to be a pinched o-ring, which I replaced today. Leak is gone.

I may have found the culprit though: http://imgbox.com/HdnrH9zR

It appears a tiny pebble is embedded in the belt. I’m going to replace the belt and hope for the best.

Took the rock out, it seemed to help at first, but the sound came back. Any ideas?

The Pump is this one: http:// http://www.eb ay. com /itm/ 350735914066 (Remove spaces, it won’t let me post the link for some reason) I think it’s aftermarket.

Get a long screwdriver out . Be careful of moving parts. Place long end against body of PS pump and then/ or engine mount with ear against handle. Which one is making the knock? Should be noticeable. IF it is the pump, get a different one. On Asian models, save your self the headache and get OEM.

                  Best of luck
