Morning guys, I’m a computer engineer not some mechanic or someone who is deeply interested in cars but, it’s growing on me, anyhoo…

I appear to be having a knocking noise on the left side of my car, it’s a Fiat Punto 1.2 (188 60BHP).

I’ve replaced the following:

Wishbones/Ball joints
Tie Rod ends
Anti-role bar bushes
Gearbox mount
Drive Shafts
Disc breaks

I have inspected the suspension mounting but, it’s like brand-new still! So, if you could tell suggest what else I could do then it would be greatly appreciated!

At high speeds, I also get a vibrating not entirely sure what it is. Wheel alignment done, wheel balancing and even swapped wheels from back to front. It’s probably down to whatever reason it’s knocking.

It mostly knocks on acceleration and deceleration, which is was I presumed drive shafts/gearbox mount. I’ve checked the Inner tie rod and there is no play.

So, I’m stuck!

What about engine mounts or trans. mounts?

Maybe Battery not clamped down.

See, I thought mounts due to its symptoms. I’ve replaced gearbox mount. Say I were to give the wheel some pressure just from kicking it, you can hear the slight knocking.

Battery is very secure, I’ve checked everything over. I really can’t find it, I’ve spoken with some Mechanics Kwikfit & small mechanics and they can’t think of anything.

Does the anti-roll bar not have link arms that connect it to the struts? You’re going to have to take the wheel off and find the looseness either with a pry bar or by rattling every ball joint, bush and link. As you’ve found, it’s a waste of time and money to replace everything in sight without checking first.

There is no link arm to the struts. You’re right, it’s getting very tedious. I’ve even had mechanics look and they are clueless so, it’s becoming very annoying!

I’ll get the wheel off and have a look again, I still can’t put my finger on it. Like I said in my prior posts it knocks on acceleration and deceleration! 🙁

While you’re in there, inspect and pry at all the engine and gearbox mounts you can find, as a knock under acceleration/deceleration is often caused by these. Check for play in the driveshafts and differential.
