Hello,

I’ve got a problem with a “knock” when changing gears – on the last step, just when letting out the clutch pedal – when the clutch engages, it makes a loud knock.

Mostly on the first first gear when going from a dead stop, slightly quieter when changing from 1 to 2, and none or very slightly knock when changing from 4 to 5. When i use a lot of gas and let the clutch pedal slowly when going from a dead stop (so the clutch “slips” a litle that way) – there is none or very slightly knock

Here is a video how does the engine react:
Video – Handbreak on, first gear, pushing in and out the clutch pedal

Firstly i though the engine mounts – that’s what my mechanic thought – but he couldn’t see any cracks, so he told me to get used to it…
So i looked at them myself. The right mount and the gearbox mount looks and feels ok, but here is what the rear and front looks like, although there are no cracks:

Rear: (im using a screwdriver and not so much force, i can easily do it with my left hand)

Front: (this looks way to loose, i can do it with my little finger)
Front mount video

Are those mounts ok? I’m no mechanic, i have no idea what a good mount looks like…

Secondly i thought the drive axles – cv joints. Both the outer had a little slack when rotating and were non OEM, so i replaced them with a good brand, now there is no play but that didn’t help it, i can still hear it – but i dont know if its any better.

The inner CV joints look good to me, maybe the driver side one can rotate loose about 1mm – 0.04inch, but can it be really it?

What else could it be? The differential?

Im able to rotate the wheel a little bit when on 1st gear and that wheel is lifted up. When doing it fast and with a lot of power i can almost mimic the action from the first video. Should i be able to do that or does that mean i have a problem in the differential?

Honda Accord 96-98′, 1.8L, european version, manual gearbox, ~110 thousand miles.

Sorry if im not using the right words – hope You can understand me, english is not my first language.

Looks and sounds like one I had to fix. It ended up being a bad clutch disk, a torsional spring in the disk broke. Also had one kind of like that and it was exhaust hitting a shield under the car when it flexed. Sounds more like the clutch though.

I can’t check the clutch disk by myself, so it’s the last step to look at this point.

Any more opinions or solutions? How about those engine mounts, do the look good or too loose?

Based on what I’m hearing and seeing I’d replace both the front and rear engine mounts. They don’t have to be cracked to be bad. The rubber can get fatigued causing them to be ‘loose’ and not dampen enough. I’ve seen this a few times however and replacing the engine mounts took care of it. Keep us posted on how things turn out for you.

I haven’t checked here for some time now, but it still hasn’t been solved.

As for the engine mounts:
I have asked an used parts dealer (which mostly sells parts from this accord year models) and he says they are fine and all of them “feel” the same as mine.

Any more opinions? This Accord would be perfect, everything works as a brand new car, only this thing bothers me a lot…
