Is anyone using the K&N pre-oiled performance air filter right now? I am planning to buy one from Amazon because it is on sale right now, and I am wondering if the it really makes a difference in terms of performance and MPG.

I am driving an 05 Toyota Avalon.

      Thanks a lot!

Not really , if your car has a air flow metre , be aware the oil on the filter can foul the wires on the sensors , I would simply clean your stock one or get a Toyota one

I fitted one to my 2007 Vw when I first bought it. I have cleaned it every year with a bit of a brush and I re-oiled it this year. It’s saved me around £80 in new filters, so I reckon I have about broken even.
I have noticed more ‘grunt’ or ‘Torque’ at the upper end when towing at the limit, but other than that, no difference.

Would I fit one again? Hell yea. And, no. No issues with any failure of air mass sensors or airflow sensors, I think that might be a rare condition caused by people over oiling them.

The guys at MCM busted the myth on aftermarket air filters. Check it out.

Not really… They tested against a new paper filter. The paper filters block a lot quicker. Note that they did not run this test against a paper filter and an oiled filter after 15k of usage…

Any gains people might feel , will more than likely be down to the placebo effect , you might get more induction noise , as with fitting a pod filter , but spending a bit more on a proper CAI might get you more power , and even that is open for debate

the effect after market filters may have on your engine largely depends on your vehicle… so any tests done on someones car are not exactly invalid, a 1996 cutlass supreme is not the same thing as a 2013 Ford F-150.

I recently bought a 95 toyota Corolla. Of course the previous owner thought it was a hot rod or something –
Fart can exhaust, bright blue “performance” ignition wires, and of course a K&N RU-5111 air filter.
I tell ya, that 1.8 does 0 to 60 in mere minutes!

Anyways – if you are going to replace the air filter, make sure and get something compatible that will go inside the air filter box. Some air intake systems have anywhere from one to three sensors situated somewhere between the air box and the upper intake. One of the sensors on my engine is just dangling. I think it probably hooked into the air box. He felt the need to toss that. I do plan on fixing this blunder.

With the filter itself, It is kind of hard to imagine the extra performance gained would offset the ridiculous cost of a K&N filter.
Just like with any hobby, there are always going to be the scams that supposedly improve things. Try not to waste your money.

in my experience a k&n performance air filter, will not make any difference, i bought it myself on my car and it hasnt made any difference, though it whistles a little under the bonnet haha :), im not saying it will not do any difference in your car, it just didnt do any on mine

I installed a K&N filter yesterday in a 1999 Camry 2.2L and the car ran fine and sounded good, except for a faint sucking noise so I’ll have to make sure the airbox isn’t leaking.

And performance will depend on your vehicle. In older Toyota motors like this 2.2L 5s-fe they have a pretty wide range of fuel trims to adapt to the change in airflow. And while my butt dyno tells me there may be maybe a few added hp, the best benefit I see is that you get smoother revving and engine braking.
