Does any one know what it means when you start your car and it idles upto and in between 2000 and 2500 rpm??? But after the initial start…it dies down to normal. My Altima does this and one of my bosses car’s does it as well and its a Nissan X-Terra…is this a Nissan thing?? I noticed that her check engine light is on but mine isn’t.

Yep pretty normal. I’m assuming when you start it up its cold outside. My car does this as well, usually revs to 2k rpm then as the engine warms up it goes slowly down to 1k rpm

Usually on a cold start you should see 12-1500 rpm’s not 2-2500
I would scan the car and see if any freeze frame data exists. As
for the bosses car plug in the scanner and pull the codes.

All engines have problems running when cold. So, to keep them from dying the engineers use what they call fast idle until the engine warms up to normal operating temperature. So, as the engine warms up the idle slows down. My car will first idle at 2000 or thereabouts even on a cool summer morning.

By the sound of it you might have a vacuum leak. I’d be checking into that. As College man pointed out, the fast idle should be more in the 1200 rpm range, not 2000. The article he posted should have info on how to check for vacuum leaks as well as other information that might be helpful to you.

Keep us posted.[/quote] okay so I rigged up a propane torch with a high-pressure hose, then took off the shield over the fuel inj/camshaft case and started my car. I turned on the tank aiming it all over every hose that looked even remotely connected to the intake manifold or the air intake and…..nothing :huh: sooo idk lol
