Buddy brought his car to me to look at . It was Extremely difficult start but once started idled fantastic. But could drain a battery just trying to get it to start. Also did not warm up at all.

Come to find out the car had the original plugs with 212k on them there was no electrode left.

So I replaced all 6 plugs with Motorcraft platinum plugs and new wires as well.

I installed a new tstat and coolant temp sensor as well as cleaning the throttle body and Iac valve.

Now the car starts easily 1st/2nd twist of key but it runs and idles like absolute garbage.
I compression tested the engine and it is all 6 cylinders are within 10% of 140.

When pulling the plugs for compression test I noticed cylinder 5 is completely black but not oily.

So help guide me in the right direction

        Ok
Now i am getting cel 1704 bank 2 lean condition. It is also backfiring through the intake manifold. .

Fuel pressure to the rail is 60 pounds but with engine off drops to 57 within 5 minutes.

I cant feel any vacuum leaks. But have not sprayed anything to confirm.

The P0174 code can sometimes be misleading with a misfire so make sure you can rule out spark troubles first since that’s where the trouble started. To say it’s running and idling like crap probably means a misfire; especially with a dirty plug on one cylinder. Double check your plug wires and make sure you routed them all to the correct cylinders. A backfire through the intake that wasn’t there before suggests a mistimed spark event.

Then try a power balance test if you can. That means you’ll disable cylinders one at a time and look for the engine to run worse. If at all possible, disconnect the injector wiring connectors. When you find a cylinder that doesn’t drop the idle worse, that means that cylinder was never contributing in the first place. For what you’ve said so far, cylinder five probably won’t produce a drop. If you can verify five isn’t making any power, swap the number five plug with number four and then see if four isn’t making any power. You’re trying to find out if one of your new plugs is a dud.

Glad you found it. Easy fixes are fun fixes.
