Well, starting as a Heavy Vehicle (Diesel) apprentice, I don’t know if you guys get them in the U.S. at all, but down here in Australia – we have this brand – KC TOOLS… After asking around a bit – most the guys in my workshop are of the opinion that they are decent brand for starters…

I went and purchased a 322pce tool chest (top and bottom) which was on special for A$2500 – and so far, feel great! I have used these before on my motorbikes – but didnt realise they are well used in the Heavy Vehicle field too…

So far, so good!! Got them delivered today – and managed to get some use out of them straight up (always good to dirty up your tools a bit hey? LOL!!)

Anyone else know about KC TOOLS at all? What was your opinion of them?

Hrm…. Here in Canada, i don’t think i’ve seen anybody actually sell KC tools but i have heard good things about them.

Never heard of them in the US. Interested to hear how they work out for you in the long run.

So far – I’m now nearly five months in – daily use on them – not a single problem! since then though, I have also added some tools (as we all know – can never have enough).

I’ve even used the sockets on a 1/2″ inch rattle gun (yes, I know you are supposed to use proper hardened sockets) with no damage – fortunately… I’m looking at getting proper impact sockets (deep impact too) – but over here in Australia (especially KC Tools as well) they are just so darn expensive!!

Have also now added to this toolbox a set of 3/4″ sockets from a brand called Kincrome (not sure if you guys get them either) – mainly of a larger size to deal with truck and trailer equipment – as the largest socket I had initially in this toolbox was a 32mm. Now my largest is 2″

Anyways – was just an update – will keep this updated as time goes by…

There was a truck in Vancouver that use to sell them, but i heard he went out of business about 5 years ago.

Its kinda funny how things are outsourced and re-branded in nearly every industry. Here in the United States, Danaher Tool manufactures Matco, Sears, Fluke, Ingersol Rand, and others including the consumer grade (Evolve) sold at KMart. You can be sure that there are other brands of tools that are ‘Private Label’ coming out of just about any tool company and Snap-On is no exception.

Glad you found some decent tools to use in your profession. Most of my really large sockets are made in China because of the cost factor, and I have never broke any.

You may look at some inexpensive impact sockets, those are durable you won’t trash your chrome sockets from hammering on them, I have had good luck using them.

I have heard for KC tool I hear the they are pretty good. I live by Eric’s philosophy “there are tools you can cheap out on, and tools you cant” “buy the best (hand) tools you can afford”.

keep us posted on how the diesel apprenticeship goes for you. A lot of young techs including myself might consider making the leap. o ya nice tools! :cheer:

What is the apprenticeship system like in Australia? Here in Canada it goes province to province and they are all a little different. I am doing my 1st year as a heavy duty mechanic (I guess its a diesel mechanic… or whatever…), its 4 years, 6 weeks of schooling every year.
I worked with a “diesel” mechanic from Australia last year, he worked for a Caterpillar dealership in Australia … like he does now… and i did. I used some of his Kincrome tools when i was working with him, but he mostly had Cat branded Snap-On.

So basically you are what we call “High-way Heavy Duty Mechanic” out here in Alberta, Canada? (or Commercial Transport Mechanic out in British Columbia)

Its basically a Diesel Mechanic apprenticeship. To work on plant equipment, etc, I need to a 6 month trade up course after my apprenticeship (eg: CAT, Detroit Diesel, Komatsu, Hitachi, etc… etc..)
