So this is kind of a long story but ill try to make it short and easy to understand.

Ever since I got my 96 k1500 pickup it has had missfire/ingnition problems. I have went through 3 distributor caps in 19,000 miles it keeps ruining them from crossfire and fouling the points with white powdery stuffand everytime I put a new rotor on it I swear I can hear it actually hitting the posts and in this one I’m pretty sure it still is. One cap even just completely cracked. But I have put new ac delco plugs in it, new plug wires, and as many rotors as caps. The misfires have got a lot less to where they generally aren’t there that I can feel. But also since I got the pickup one of the screws that holds the cap down some one stripped out and just put a bigger screw in it which worked fine until I had the cap off last time and the outside half of the hole broke off but it still held it. But. The other day the other half of the screw hole gave out, and I had been getting alot of random misfires along with horrible gas mileage.

So I went ahead and took the cap off and cleaned all the white powdery stuff out and just used silicone to hold it for now ( I usually only drive it around town) while I was in there I also tried to check the shaft for play ( not really sure what I was looking for) and there seemed to be a very slight amount of play forward and back and side to side.

I’m just skeptical about replacing the shaft if its fine other than that screw which is bad. And I’m not sure i have heard of them actually going bad what do you guys think?

Something else that oil and gas burin in the cylinder and create really greats pressure in It. The white power and misfire is clues. It’s look like a leak head gasket. Coolant leaking out in the cylinder slowly. I had a head gasket failure, I had whit smoke in cold start up and misfire in cylinder 4. I use SealSteal product to avoid huge bill. You can use a leak test to be sure before doing any decision.

Well the missfire isn’t on any one specific cylinder and the computer only comes up with it once in a while. That is a good test though I think I might try it. Also the exhaust looks pretty normal and I’m not losing coolant but once in a while the exhaust smells a little like gas and it usually corresponds with the po300 code

Look for a vacuum leak too. Gas smell in the exhaust might be an excess gas in the combustion chamber due to a an excess air after the mass air flow sensor.

I looked for intake leaks and found none. But my mileage/misfires were Getting worse alot with the noise coming from the distributor cap.( sounded like it was actually hitting the posts) so I replaces the shaft with a replacement one from nappa and used my cousins computer to finish the timing. The motor runs alot smoother and seems alot quieter now along with my mileage seems to be about .5 mpg better then it was befor. 🙂
