I am beginning a Junk Yard Business. Right now I am selling used parts. Eg. Alternators, Doors Etc. Please give me any insights that you may have about this type of business.

P.S I noticed that I really don’t have much competition. It seems like most people don’t want to do this type of business. Again. Please let me know what you think about it….

It sounds good to me. You have to make a living anyway you can. You just have to be careful of the environmental gods. They are really starting to crack down on leaking fluids etc. as well as other toxic substances.

That’s a very good point ! Up here in Canada they are getting big on the environment. The Big companies pollute the most. But they blame the small people….. Thanks for the tip.

Oh you will have a lengthily list of environmental regulations to follow, add on a similar list of workplace safety rules. WHMIS compliance, whomever regulates refrigeration chemicals needs paperwork. Then ad on all the paperwork the government wants, payroll taxes, sales taxes, property taxes.

I guess the biggest issue would be that all the jobbers use recyclers who offer warranties and their all online. I guess if you could find a niche you could be successful, or if there really is no local competition. The most important thing would probably be knowing your customer, ie who lives in your area and what do they drive.

Out of curiosity where are you where there’s no wreckers?

One thing I notice in my own personal business is if a salvage yard prices a used part too near new price I automatically think all their prices are too high and don’t shop there again. So, I think you need a good feel for what new parts go for. I don’t know how you would obtain this information.

Good point. The idea is to sell for less as well as providing excellent service for the customers. The great thing is that you are able to 1) Make a profit. 2) Sell things that are not easy to come by at times and 3) Help out the environment.
