I can understand why some employers don’t want to hire in experienced techs. They can be a liability at times, and can harm themselves and others. But the biggest factor is going to be your location. If you are willing to work for less until you get that experience then you might find a job faster. Try fixing friends and family members cars. You almost have to advertise for yourself to get work at times.

You will likely need to find an independent willing to take a chance or start from the bottom at a dealership. At the dealership I work at, tech school graduates start on express or even as a greeter, then get moved up as qualified/needed. When applying, make sure you address & submit your cover letter & resume to the hiring manager. Submitting an application at HR or an online app puts you in a pile going nowhere. Pass all ASE tests that you can even if you don’t have the work experience – regardless of your opinion on certifications, they will help you get a job. Complete your EPA 609 refrigerant certification if you haven’t already. Do anything you can to show that you are capable & motivated. Make sure your tool set is up to snuff. Be persistent in your efforts.

apply at chain shops, goodyear, firestone, pep girls, sears auto, they have a huge turnover rate and are always looking for tire techs. From doing tires u can learn to do brakes, alignments and then underhood repairs. Then once you get that experience move on to the real shops. Thats what I did.

He is right. It’s hard to get the experience when no one will hire you, but pep boys, goodyear, NTB, sears, etc are good places to start. the pay is bad, but you can rack up a lot of experience quickly. And the ASE tests help a lot. employers want experience but if they see you are motivated, and taking ASE tests, they are more likely to give you a chance.

If you did diesel, look for equipment dealers, mines, and large equipment outfits and try to get on as a helper/labouer/lube truck and move your way up.
