I have 96 Jeep Cherokee that I replaced the slave cylinder on. The problem is still the same as it was before though. If the car is running, you can’t move it into gear regardless of clutch pedal position. As soon as the jeep is turned off you can move it in and out at will. There is a lot of play in the pedal. Could this be the master cylinder instead or is it something else? How do I go about figuring out what it is?

        Welcome to the forums !

Since the slave cylinder replacement did not help you may a bad master cylinder. first- take a look under the dash , follow the clutch pedal up until you see the push rod that goes from the clutch pedal to the master cylinder. follow the push rod back twords the firewall and check for any fluid leaking from the seal. if that seal is bad it will be wet around the area were the push rod goes through the firewall. also check to see if the clutch pedal is adjustable. if you didnt already do so bleed the master/slave cylinder system. if the master cylinder doesn’t have any visible leaks and you can bleed the system really well and the pedal its self is adjusted properly then you probably have a problem with the clutch components them selves ( possibly a worn clutch cover ) how many miles are on this jeep ?

          +1 on the above post.

If the pedal is still ‘spongey’, you still have air in the system. If the clutch master cylinder was at fault, usually there will be a sign of hydraulic fluid leaking from the rear and onto the clutch pedal itself.

Yea check all the hydraulics first as mentioned above and if all of that is good and you still have the same problem it’s time to remove the trans and get a look at the clutch and pressure plate.

Thanks guys, I’ll try replacing the mc whenever I get around to it, not the primary vehicle. If that doesn’t work…well we’ll go from there. 🙂
