I have had my 1998 Honda accord 2.3L VTEC sense before I started driving. It was my sisters second car and I bought it from her. Sense I bought it, I have made several a number of repairs and played catch up all the maintenance. Iv gone overboard along the way and make a number of mistakes. I must say I have learned so much because of this car and I love it!

Just the other day I got a call from the my college campus police department stating that someone hit my car in the parking lot. I promptly went out to great the owner of the other vehicle and the police office. Both of the individuals were very nice and I calmly approached them and talked about the situation with them. It was snowy outside and the owner of the other vehicle slid into my car while trying to make at turn around the corner. I was of course parked in the corner of the parking lot. The battery had died in the other owner’s vehicle, so he was stuck smashed into the front of my car. We had to wait for the campus maintenance department to come and give him a jump. While we waited, we got to chat for a bit and get to know each other. That made me feel a little better about the situation. After he got the guy his truck started, I got to watch my car get tore up a little more as he backed it off of it.

The good news is that the guys insurance is up to date and his insurance company will be paying for the repairs. With that said, I wonder if the car can be totaled. If it can, then that means that I have to say goodbye! That is what is HARD to think about! It would however, be a great opportunity to upgrade considering that my VTEC acts up from time to time because of a little bit of sludge from when my sister owned the car. The sludge clogs of up the VTEC solenoid filter and I have to clean it every few months. Yuck! The other problem is that it has a very slow coolant leak or a few leaks that are super slow, but enough to cause big problems in between oil changes if i don’t fill it back up. I have attempted to repair it a number of times and fixed a couple of different leaks in different places over the years. It has improved greatly but is still a problem. I have even had two mechanics attempt to repair it recently, but they have not been entirely successful. There are also a few other things that bother me a bit and could potently end up being a problem later on down the road. The mechanic did tell me that the car is in great shape without me even asking what he thought.

Ahhh its hard! I i’m just thinking of saying goodbye. Yes I do want a new car with no issues, but have literally putt my blood sweat and tears into this car I currently own. Literally all three! There are also many memories that go with it. I just don’t ever want to say goodbye. I’m 20 years old but the thought of saying goodbye makes me want to almost cry. One part of me thinks its just a car but the other part of me thinks about all that it means to me.

I know it’s long rant but I just want to share some of my thoughts and feelings. Feel free to share any of your own thoughts! Peace 🙂

I had a beloved 05 Toyota Matrix die via accident. I feel your pain. But there is a light at the end of the tunnel, even if it is totaled. Think about it! Car shopping! Literally endless troves of vehicles ready for you to look at. It’s not all bad. I love my F-150 better than my old Toyota. You can search for exactly what you want now. Even if it’s something similar. The world becomes your oyster in that regard.

          Hi erikslow1,

That’s such a shame since even if the car is a total loss, your compensation will be minimal, unlikely to cover the cost of replacing it. I’ve been through this, back when my son had what appeared to be a minor accident with our older Civic (we called it the wreck of the old 97). But that minor damage was more than 70% of the vehicle’s value. Dealing with the other driver’s insurance company was a nightmare until I finally started dealing with someone who seemed to care. We ended up with a fairly generous settlement, and I put it toward another slightly newer Civic. So please be patient but also very persistent!! Good luck!

Thanks you guys for your support. Today I found out by the insurance company that my car is a total lost. I also got a Quote form a body shop before the insurance company looked at it. I was quoted $3,100 for repairs as the value of my car is $3,200. Ned less to say, yup, its totaled. I have been offered over $3,200 for the car from the insurgence company and I am taking the offer.

The money i’m getting is more than likely going towards a 2003 Honda Accord LX 2.4L. The car I have been looking at is in great condition and according to car fax it is worth $890 above market value. Market value is $6,250. Add those together and you get $7,140. I was able to talk the dealer down form $7000 to $6000. Unfortunately that does not include any taxes, but I don’t think that is to bad. Maintenance records and everything else looks pretty good on car fax as well. I’m having a hard time turning it away. Form my visual inspection and test drive everything seems to be in really good shape.

Transmission fluid from the dip stick had a lot of pink to it and the engine oil was supper clean. Coolant level and master cylinder fluid levels were all good. It had the OEM Honda coolant. There are no detailed records on the maintenance but it seems really well kept up. If I get it I want to at least change out the transmission fluid so that I can get the best life out of that thing that I can. I just hope that does not destroy it. And yes it will be the Honda fluid. I would never use anything else. I also need to see if the timing belt has been changed. If not, I will do a timing belt and water pump job this May when I get out of school. It is at a little over 130,500 miles right now so its due if it did not have one before. I saw on the maintenance records that it had a service done at around 92,000 miles so I hope that included a timing belt.

All in all I am excited about a getting a newer car! I still love my old one and I just might drop a few tears when it gets taken away, but I can always hold on to the memories. As you said DaFirnz, “But their still just things” and yes certainly they can be replaced. Within the next week I may have a new car! 😆

A car is NOT always just a “thing”. It is part of who you are. Some cars are with us during major life changes. Their worth cannot always be summed up by a dollar sign. Though it was not my own car, my dad used to have a 79 thunderbird when I was a kid. I used to love riding in that car, sitting in the back and watching the rain or semi trucks on the highway on the way to Gandma’s house for the holidays…

Let me tell you my story. I had a 99 cougar. It was not in good shape, needed numerous repairs but it ran EVERY time. One day I got side swiped. Even after the wreck (most damage was to the driver door.) It took over a month before i decided to follow through with an insurance claim. Totaled, of course.
So I scheduled for the insurance company to pick it up. The very last trip I made in it, coming home from work one night, I was almost in tears. I felt like I was giving up on an old friend, but honestly, the car had so many problems that it would not have been practical to fix everything.

So this is your first car? Yes, one’s first car does hold a special place. For me, the first car I had for any length of time was an 81 aries. Had two cars before that, one got stolen (later recovered) and the other was an 83 escort which was a real POS. So really, the Aries was my first. I had it for years, it saw me through a couple trips 1/2 way across the country, had it when I married, and when my kid was born. It was also the car I learned the basics of car repair. To this day I wish I could somehow find and buy back that car.

You will have several cars over the years. Some you will love and shed tears when you say good bye, and some cars you will hate with a passion.

True that! I had a car for 10 years. It was so hard to let go! 🙁

Well Its been a few months now but I have a new car. The insurance took my old car for auction. At times I have missed my old car a little bit, but I like my new one even more. I now have a 2004 Honda Accord 2.4L Lx with less than 100K on it. Iv just got a few things to fix on it… I think that it will serve me well.
