I think it could be air in your cooling system. Try bleeding it properly and see what happens after.

Did you try using a block tester or a cooling system pressure tester?
July 29, 2012 at 11:00 am #462425Tried to a block tester but radiator is cross flow and fill neck is right where water is pouring back into the tank so it kept getting contaminated. Going to try again using some clear hose to get the tester away from the water flow if the hose will seal
July 29, 2012 at 11:00 am #462426The parts store should have them. Also pressure test the radiator cap._x000D_

You can also try doing a leak down test and checking for air bubbles on the radiator too.July 29, 2012 at 11:00 am #462427Cap & radiator tested OK. Local parts stores don’t rent leak down testers. I improvised by taking the valve out of my compression checker hose. Ran out of time before I finished but got the left side done. With about 50lbs of air pressure I got no
July 30, 2012 at 11:00 am #462428It doesn’t look good but you might want to purge the air from the system for starters._x000D_

After that you might take some coolant out of the radiator before trying the block test again, not allJuly 30, 2012 at 11:00 am #462429I’ll definitely re-purge the air — did it, still had overheating, flushed, & refilled but went straight to checking for leaks. Will purge & see if I’m still getting the bubbles._x000D_

Assuming I am, how likely is it a compression check would tell meJuly 30, 2012 at 11:00 am #462430Some compression readings will be within specs on vehicles with some over heating issues._x000D_

If you do indeed have a blown head gasket, usually 2 cylinders side by side will show lower than usual readings.July 31, 2012 at 11:00 am #462431Finished checking for air bubbles in the radiator – none.
July 31, 2012 at 11:00 am #462432What fan set up are you using and do you have a fan shroud installed?
August 1, 2012 at 11:00 am #462433You may not find a head gasket leak with a leak down test but based on your description I think it’s likely you do have a combustion leak into the cooling system somewhere.
August 1, 2012 at 11:00 am #462434Eric i know you are probably right, but I’m going to try re-bleeding it before i pull the heads. If I can avoid the expense of the gaskets I’d like to._x000D_
