      Hi there,

been reading a lot of ETCG’s posts and watching videos. Thought I sign up to try and give back, but first I do have some questions.

I have a 4runner 2004 with rear disks. They are known for seizing so i tried to test to make sure they are okay. Plus when i decided to look it seemed the caliper piston was pretty rusted. but it could just be surface rust.

I pumped the brake petal 1-2 times just to extend the piston a little bit to see if it will flow back and forth freely And it did! However I did notice that before and after pics there was a a little bit of ‘fluid’ around the piston. is this brake fluid seeping out slowly or just normal ? as you can see in the before and after pic the before looks try to the touch, while the extended brake piston looks to have a little liquid around it.

when i was changing out the brakes i did rust circle the outlining where the piston was, is that normal too?

      Thanks in advance guys 🙂

Brake fluid should not leak from any part of the system.

Braking works via hydraulic pressure or fluid compressed at the master cylinder which pushes the piston against the brake pad and rotor each time the brake pedal is pressed.

The caliper needs a rebuild or replacement; if they are the same age it might be a good idea to rebuild or replace both sides.

The system will also need to bleeding once reinstalled.

          Thanks for the reply!

does that look like brake fluid seeping out to you?

It does look like it is just starting to get past the seal.

Just curious, how old are they?

came with the car 11 years old.

the front rotor did leak before. so if its a question mark… I guess for safety 100 dollars each side its worth it to swap?

edit i have the car on jacks now. I do need to swap out the rotors.

the car has been on jacks for 2 weeks now because i keep having to wait for weekend to be able to do anything
