So my friend freaked out yesterday afternoon when his “idiot” oil light started flashing sporadically as he called it, he overfilled the engine by 2 quarts of oil and he was burning it now BAD, he showed me a video of the massive plume of smoke he was trailing behind him and had no way to drain it, I told him to make it to my house so he drove it like that for about 10 miles, I know now his oil pump is giving out, but what about the cataconverter, is it ruined from pushing all that oil through it? As far as we know It’a the original on his ’91 Integra.

I’ve seen Eric’s videos on trying to clean catalytic converters with no real success, is it even worth trying? A $30 test pipe for a 26 year old car is looking tempting, especially since hes going to shell out for a new oil pump.

At this stage just see what happens.

First thing siphon the excess oil and see if the oil light stops flickering and stays off.

Second just because it was overfilled doesn’t necessarily mean the pump is now bad.

Do you live in an area that does emissions testing and if so removing the cat is not an option.

If you have an infrared thermometer (pretty cheap these days), you can check the converter. Go to about 4:30 in this etcg video:

Since the car is not OBDII, the other stuff may be interesting but not applicable to this car.

You can also knock on the converter and if it sounds like there is gravel inside, it’s toast.

The oil light was flickering before he overfilled the engine, drained the oil and installed a cheap oil pressure gauge to verify the pump is failing. We’ll be tacking that this weekend.
