Hey guys, I’ve got an ’03 Celica GT with 167K on it, and the four speed o/d trans. I’m having three problems with this trans—1) upshifts are sometimes harsh, like it bangs into gear 2) if I’m driving and I hold it to the floor, the trans will not upshift—the engine just bounces off of the rev limiter until I lift off the gas, then it will shift. 3) when it’s cold, overdrive will not kick in until I’ve driven it a couple of minutes.

I’ve checked the fluid, and it’s not low. It also looks like it’s supposed to, and doesn’t smell burned.

Would changing the fluid and filter help, or is it just too far gone? Thanks.

Do you have a ck engine light on or OD light flashing? If so get it scanned by a competent repair shop that has the proper software and equipment to retrieve the codes. Don’t use a code reader. Sounds like you could have a bad sensor on the trans or engine. Later model transmissions rely on inputs from many systems to adjust for shifting strategy. Let us know what you find out..

Finding a transmission repair shop that will fix it is going to be hard. Will not get or touch the foreign automatic transmissions.Check the fluid level in neutral, not in park. The pump does nothing in park is the reason why to do it this way.

There are no check engine lights, but taking it to a trans shop to have the codes read is a good idea.

I didn’t know you had to check transmission fluid in neutral, I shall check the level again.

            Thanks guys

#3 might be normal, lots of cars lock-out OD until the engine warms to a certain temp

Not to take over your thread just some input with whats happening with mine.

Isuzu bighorn 4 speed with OD mine does number 2 also but i never let it hit hit rev limit. Changing into gear from park to drive gives the truck a jolt and bad noise

Mechanic changed oil and filter on friday said trans is slipping and needs repair, it actaully seems worse after changing the oil.

TOD display has a check trans light on when in 2wd yet not in 4wd
