2005 Honda CRV LX, AWD 136000 miles.

I love this car and want to keep it if its worth fixing if not I’ll trade it in for a new one.

Bought new in 2005, maintained by myself since new, BIG thanks to ETCG videos and a few others.
All the fluid changes done by the book, as per the owners manual.

There is a whining noise coming from the engine compartment. However the whining goes away when I put the car in the gear.
To noise is there only when in Park and Neutral. There is no loss in the performance of car and no hard shifting whatsoever.

      Any ideas, suggestions.

      Thanks very much

      Matt

Take the serpentine belt/belts off and see if the whining goes away. If it does one of the engine accessories has a bad bearing if not then you would need to look further into where exactly the noise is coming from. You can get a cheap engine stethoscope to help you pin point the exact area and go from there.

Thanks for reply. I’ll try it right away

Have a question though. Pls excuse my ignorance. If it was the accessories do you think the whining would go away when the car was in Drive?

Probably not but its an easy test and I have seen some weird things before. Its hard to help with noises over the internet obviously because were not there to listen to it. does it make the noise with the vehicle in drive and the vehicle not moving or in drive while the vehicle is moving?

              No noise when in drive.
Only when in Park or in Neutral

Yeah I just reread it. I would still start with taking off the belt and running it to see if the noise goes away and go from there.
