Is It possible to build A Small Car Engine with a book with little car XP? I am pretty good at doing everything i do. I have worked on basic car projects. I was looking at this Haynes Repair Book.http://www.ebay.com/itm/Haynes-Toyota-C … 0615505771

Depends on what exactly you are expecting the book to do. Haynes goes over basic engine construction with pictures, but a service manual for the vehicle you plan to work off of can be found on Ebay for pennies on the dollar and you get much more comprehensive information. However, they are not as easy to read as they are technical manuals. I got a 3 book set for my 98 Astro for $40 and it’s a wealth of information.

          Welcome to the forums!

To successfully build an engine, you will need the tools and a lot of knowledge. You can try yourself by self educating and buying the correct materials but you will need to invest in the correct tools.

What engine are you thinking of building?

The last 2 i rebuilt were a E7 302 and a then Mazda engine but that particular one was back in 07.

Im Planning on building A 4AGE Twin Cam For my AE86 Corolla. I found the car for $400.00 with the engine needing to be rebuilt and I know a lot about engine but never got inside one before. I think this would be a challenge i would be up for. Im not worried about tools i have someone with a shop that has tools. Can someone point me in the right direction as what kind of books/Service Manual I need.

Automotive Engines Diagnosis – Repair – Rebuilding by Tim Gilles is a good book, although mine is 5th edition from 07 so i’m sure its updated since then.

The 2010 one is $65 bucks on E-bay.
