What does the FSM say about installing these bolts? Are they torque to yield bolts that require a certain amount of torque, and then a certain amount of degrees turned after the torque is reached? If the FSM says to replace them, I would do so. Those bolts will be typically stretched to the limit of their capacity, and be useless afterwards. Especially when it comes to your subframe, I wouldn’t cheap out.

Service manual (94-97 Accord) says to replace ‘special bolts’ (like those used in the subframe & engine mounts).

They usually don’t recommend unless it needs to be. Do the job correctly the first time and less worries later.

              Thanks much for the replies!
The manual says to torque the bolts to a specific value (with no additional ‘degrees’ of torque). I was just curious if it was that big of a deal.
I can get new bolts from hondaautomotiveparts.com where I usually get my parts from, but they are $7 each (and there are 8 bolts total for the front and rear beams–this is for a 1996 LX Accord Coupe, Manual Trans.). I usually do what the manual says but nearly $30 in bolts for each beam made me pause. I guess I’ll go with new to be on the safe side.

I guess I’ve been doing it wrong all these years then. It is true that they want you to replace those bolts but in my experience you don’t have to, they’re ‘special’ because in the event of a collision they are designed to sheer to absorb impact I believe.

Thanks for your input Eric, I really appreciate it coming from a Honda guy.
