So i’ve been working on a MB c230 1998, I went to go back up and herd a grinding noise, so i put it in drive and the car would not go very good my wife said the front tire was not spinning? So i raised the car and the front tires spin free. the back tires was not, the right would spin the left would not, so i took off the tire and rotated the “rotor” by hand.. It has 2-3 inches of play but cant do a full rotation it feels like something is stopping it. so i took off the brakes, the unit that holds the brakes and i took off the “rotor” aka no brakes at all, i turned what i could grab by hand and it turns full but u can here a sound that i cant explain cumming from the “trans-axle” i think thats what it called i dont know if its suppose to be quiet when u turn them but the fast i tried to turn the more u would here it, so i started the car and put it in drive and both turn i couldn’t really hear the noise because of the car being on. as i kept it in drive i went over to were the tire would be and that part that is rotating i could stop by hand but the other one would keep turning. Idk if its suppose to do that or not. I dont think there is anything wrong with the trans but im so confused. If anyone can give me input that would be cool.

when you put the brakes back on did the noise come back.
        see if this helps.

If the car has been sitting a long time then grinding noises from the brakes are normal, it’s all that rust.

If the car doesn’t go good then I would check the transmission fluid level.

The rotation you saw was normal. It’s how differentials work. More info here.

I would be taking a close look at the brakes based on your description. Perhaps they need servicing.

More info on solving brake problems in the article College man posted.

Good luck and keep us posted.
