      Bit of back ground…
My father was a diesel mechanic, so I grew up with being in the garage and helping out…
However here in Scotland there is still a glass ceiling against female mechanics. So, I studied medicine and became a surgeon here in the UK. Secretly, I always wanted to be a mechanic like my dad. After 20 years of fixing people deep in their ‘blood and guts’ I’m retired from medicine.

Currently,I am setting up a little ‘workshop’ I fix Mercedes, Renault, Ford and Peugeot cars. I cannot face going to study mechanics at a college.

I actually find it rather interesting and amusing (in a good way) to be met by a female mechanic those few times that I bump into them. I would tip my hat to you if I had a hat, but I don’t :P.

But I honestly think that most women going through mechanics school will eventually make a lot better mechanic then your average male. Simply through the fact that you as a female face a lot of hardship and challenges going through mechanics school and then actually finding an internship etc. Which basically means that those women that eventually go through with it and comes out on the other end literally lives and breathes cars and wants to work on them if you catch my drift 🙂

Not that some male mechanics doesn’t live and breathe cars, but I would just think that kind of obstacles tends to lead to well better mechanics in the long run.

But at the same junction I don’t blame you for not bothering with that kind of issues and simply deciding to truck on with what you really want to do :). I for one wish you the best of luck with your change of job and your endavours.

At times you might come to feel that fixing people was easier…… Renaults have that potential…..
My wife has been my shop shadow for 20-years. She has successfully replaced a head gasket on an older FORD Escort with minimal assistance from me. She wanted to have the hands on experience. One of her many bright attributes is being able to objectively think outside of the box when my head is deep in despair and I’m at a dead end with a job I’m doing, she always has a fresh idea, or I’ll give her the keys to something and say go for a ride and tell me what you think. She never fails to come up with a similar diagnosis to mine and more!

I’ve always believed that accurate diagnosis is the key to successful Auto and People Repair. Go for it Doc! The Peugeots are OK but oh those Renaults…….

I know what you mean about Renault’s. My pal has a Clio, who designed this car? The ABS ECU is under the cup holder… a spill later and the ABS goes crazy. I had to design a PCB and eprom just to reset the unit after washing off what seems to be coke from the internals with trichloroethylene.

Sorry to say, but any french car will be the last car brand I would ever own :P. I wouldn’t hold on to one even if I won one.

I mean when they are brand new they aren’t exactly bad, but from what I can tell they have a bad bad tendency to pick up electrical gremlins much faster then any other brand really.

The thing is how do you tell a pal “your car is crap” when she tells you I love my Maisie.. I can’t bring myself to do it.

Personally I prefer honesty over anything else. My mechanic friend once told me with a wide grin: “Mate your car is so messed up I won’t even take it off your hands for the scrap value”. Did it sting, sure it did, but I preferred him being honest rather than sugar coating it.

I sure wish my daughter had some interest in car repairs. Tough business to make a living at, but knowing where the hood (bonnet) latch is and how to check/add oil and change a tire should be mandatory for anyone with a driver’s license.
