For some background, I have a 2001 Ford Escape XLT, V6. I’ve been having an issue, from time to time over the last month or so. The car runs fine, but occassionaly, if I stop off somewhere and then return to the car shortly after, it will not re-start. The engine will crank and try, but no start. I’ve noticed that it tends to happen if I’ve driven the car up to temp and it has not had enough time to cool down before the next attempt to start. I typically leave the vehicle for at least an hour and it will then restart fine. Other than this one issue, the car has been well maintained and runs fine.
I’ve read some places that it could be the Crankshaft Position Sensor, possibly becoming an ‘open’ circuit when the engine is hot? But will close again upon cooling? Has anyone had this same issue? Could it possibly be as easy as just replacing this sensor?

Any help would be greatly appreciated – Thanks!

a crankshaft position sensor tells the PCM of the position of the crank so it knows when too fire the spark plugs and fuel injectors, if it failed when it got hot it would completely shut your engine off not only prevent it from starting and you would probably have a code for the crank sensor, this is a common issue with my car, as the crankshaft position sensor fails it just shuts the car off because the PCM doesn’t know the position of the crank, doesn’t know when too fire the spark plugs or fuel injectors and the engine cant run or even try and fire…

is your engine light on, do you have any codes? what condition is the battery?

        here is this also.

          Thanks for the reply.

No check engine light, so I haven’t bothered trying to pull a code. The battery is almost brand new, about 6 months old.

From what I’ve read about similar issues, there’s always ‘something’ that people see that I do not, in their list of symptoms. The car has never stalled out or died on me, only failed to crank over.

Does it crank at full speed?

Since the battery is new– make sure the battery connections are tight– you can’t turn the clamps by hand on the battery terminals. And make sure they’re clean.

The battery connection is fine. Like I said, the car runs, as far as I can tell, absolutely fine once it’s started. It’s so aggravating having to worry about whether or not it will not start randomly, because of the time I have to let it sit, when that does happen. There are usually several things that point you in one direction, but I essentially have one, that leads me in several. Thanks for all the input. If I get this figured out, I’ll let everyone know what the result was.

even without a MIL present there could be history codes, sometimes with PCMs if the issue “goes away.” it will turn the MIL off and put the codes in history, this way if its a intermittent failure you can still view the code as a “history code.” check for codes despite the MIL, this may give you a indicatior of what may be happening.
