      1991 Volvo 740 non turbo

This vehicle will not start right away and will, for some reason, start after 45-60 minutes.

Can you hear the fuel pump? Since it’s at ’91 i would guess that you have the main fuel pump in the tank, and not under the the car as on most 740’s. Have someone listen in the filler neck when you crank.
        Possible causes:
The relay, remove ashtray and the shelf above, white relay to the left. Replace or resolder, most common problem is bad solder points.
The pump itself. Easiest way to test is to give the bottom of the tank a good whack with a broomstick or whatever. If that brings it back to life, replace it.

I need a little bit of clarification if you don’t mind. When you say ‘no start’ is it a crank no start or a no crank no start? Also HOW does it crank if it does, does it seem slow or like it doesn’t have enough power? A better description would be helpful in addition to any check engine light codes you might have stored in the computer’s memory.

I can hear the fuel pump and for some reason it will start after turning the steering wheel. Relay or something in the steering column?

No start? or just takes forever to crank the car to start?
This is one of the car that has a fuel check valve in front of the fuel pump/fuel filter. This little $10 valve sometimes fails does not hold the fuel pressure which will cause difficult to start condition.

No crank no start or no start no crank?

Sounds like that the fuel relay took a dump on you.

It’s a common problem on these cars and it’s a cheap and easy fix.

To reach it, remove the ash tray and then the cover for the lighter, remove the screws and take the cover away. It’s the big white relay, id you wiggle it bit and then if the car starts, there is your problem, just replace the relay whit a new one.
