I have a 2004 Buick Lesabre with about 165,000 and I had a interesting problem with my headlights just emerge. Yesterday while heading to work, a friend told me my right headlight (low beam) was out. No problem, I’d change the bulb when I got home. When I got home, the light was working. Ok, I thought loose connection. Checked wires and everything seemed good. Then this morning, the light wasn’t working again! I checked the light with the car running, plug was tight, no loose connections. I also noticed that the when I flashed my brights on to check my hi-
beams, the lights flashed but didn’t stay on. I tried it several times and still brights wouldn’t stay on. Hmmm? When I came home this afternoon, the headlight was on this time and the brights worked! Another side note; I just went out to check it out again and the headlight didn’t work when I started the car but it did work when I unlocked and locked the car with my remote fob. I have no Idea where to start with this problem. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Start with the simple stuff. If you haven’t done it already, pull the sockets off the bulbs and look for corrosion in the terminals. White or green corrosion can play all kinds of tricks at the sockets alone. According to my wiring diagram, both ground wires for the right side headlights are black. If you know how to jumper a wire, jumper either black wire to a clean ground and look for the lights to start working. Just focusing on that lo beam alone, it might just be time to change it. Filaments can break and still maintain just enough contact to give you intermittent operation.

Your issue with the hi beams not holding makes me think that you’ve got a bad multi function switch. If you can’t feel or hear the normal snap when you do switch from the lo to hi beams, the switch likely broke internally.

I inspected the headlight plug and know corrosion noted. I noticed that the filament was broken on the bulb so I replaced it; works great. I never had a bulb do that before so it threw me for a loop for troubleshooting. So far the high beams are working and I hear the click in the switch so I’ll just keep an eye on it for now. Thanks again.
