Hi Everyone,
I am new to the forum but been following ETCG vids for a while now. I have been having intermittent crank but no start issue with my car and thought I would seek advice from brilliant minds around here. I live in South Africa and I do not have any background with cars, my knowledge is based on how to videos online and performing basic servicing on my car at every service interval. I am also the only owner of this vehicle from brand new and drive it 99.5% of the time. I will provide as much information as I can, sorry if this post gets a bit long.
My car is a Kia Rio5 1.6 CVVT, manual, 2008 year model. It currently has 161000KM’s (around 100000 miles). Major repairs done is only the clutch has been replaced around March this year, apart from this the normal wear and tear items such as brakes, belts etc. The car has been extremely reliable until now. I do not miss any of the services and make sure I use good quality parts and oil.
My problem started about 3 months ago but the past month it is happening every day. In the mornings when I turn the key, car will crank but won’t start, I have to turn the key at least twice or up to 5 times to get going, when I get to my destination if I get back in the car I would say within the hour the car will start first time no problems. I noticed if the weather is really warm in the afternoon and the car has been sitting for a few hours it can take me 30 mins to an hour to start the car. When the car cranks I see the tachometer reads about 500rpm, I don’t hear the fuel pump spool (never heard the fuel pump run apart from when the car is running since I owned it). I sometimes hear kind of gurgling/bubbling sound which sounds like it is coming from under the car and going towards the fuel rail.
What I have done so far:
– Replaced the fuel pump and filter about 3 months ago when the issue first appeared.
– Tested for power at the pump connector I see 12v on the tester.
– Replaced the crankshaft position sensor a week ago.
– Replaced the starter and the battery (the Bendix gear was bad) also a week ago.
– Put additive into the fuel to clean injectors.
– Cleaned throttle body, IAC and air sensor.
– Checked for spark when the car isn’t starting, the spark is good.
– Checked and replaced fuel pump relay with matching unit.
– Disassembled and cleaned immobiliser antenna contacts.
– Connected OBD2 tool but there are no errors.Additional observations/Info:
– When filling the car up with fuel if the petrol attendant over fill the tank past the auto stop, the car will jerk and cut for a few miles but never stall the engine. When the fuel is filled until the auto stop at the pump, the car runs fine. This was never an issue until 3 months ago.
– I try to fill up when at about 1/4 tank don’t like waiting for the yellow light.
– I am unfortunately limited to only hand tools, have no diagnostic tools apart from the Bluetooth OBD2 tool.
– Apart from the starting problem once the car is running I can drive in heavy traffic, long distance up to 3 hours no stop without any over heat, misfire or power loss.I hope the information provided will be sufficient.
