      HI Guys,

I have a 96 97 b18c -r in my Del Sol and I’m always nervous about the timing belt tension being too loose, or too tight. I replaced the water pump, timing belt, and tensioner with OEM parts from Acura, but I DIDN’T replace the tensioner spring. I follow the procedure just like Eric does, tdc, loosen the bolt 180 degrees, push down on the cam pulleys while I turn it over 3 teeth, tighten bolt, but I keep worrying that the tension is incorrect. So the question is, on the front side, how much should the belt move when I push on it, or try to twist it? I’ve searched all over and can’t find exactly what I need. A visual aid would be super helpful.

      Thanks for the suggestions!

If u did the tightening correctly there is nothing to worry about, even with the old tension spring. If u want to make sure, push the belt with your finger to bend it, it should move about half inch (1cm) i think. Or u can try to push the slack with your finger towards the camshaft sprockets. If u see a tooth coming out of his place and like trying to “jump over” then u have to tight the belt again.

You don’t need to worry about the spring if you set the tension as you describe. In fact I’ve never replaced one that wasn’t damaged. The belt should have no movement on the top or front of the belt but a slight amount of deflection on the rear part of the belt when you check it. Also know that as you rotate the engine the tension will vary slightly due to the valve springs pushing on the cams as it rotates so be sure and do your check with the engine at TDC #1 cylinder. If you get it too tight, you will hear an engine wine as it runs. Too loose and you will likely have a rough idle.
